The quality of education depends on your major, I guess. From the few classes I’ve taken in H&SS (Humanities and Social Sciences), I think the University’s humanities department isn’t that great—at least, the introductory courses aren’t. If you’re into a technological field, then the school is not bad. The computer science program is not bad at all. The teachers usually know what they’re talking about, unlike most other places. Regardless, it really depends on your major.

In appraising CMU, most students are appreciative of the fantastic education they’re receiving and the one-of-a-kind experience that the campus offers. At CMU, students have an unprecedented opportunity to explore their fields of study. Sometimes it’s hard for students to see all opportunities that Carnegie Mellon gives them. Students who are unhappy with their experience are often frustrated with the sub-par social situation or the massive amount of work.
No matter how fed up students get with the amount of work, the social scene, or the bad weather, students are often glad they came to CMU when they think about the unique experience the school has given them. The academic opportunities you will receive at CMU are astounding, and everyone on campus is truly dedicated to learning. Though the time spent at CMU may not fulfill some students’ hopes of living a wild youth, the years spent at Carnegie Mellon can be just as exciting in some ways. It’s different. And for people who don’t want the same college experience as everyone else, it can be exciting.

"I like CMU a lot, but I wish it were in a different location. Pittsburgh weather can get you down sometimes, but luckily, you get twelve free sessions per year with a psychologist."

"I don’t wish I were anywhere else. CMU has a ton of really interesting people. Students are racially diverse, live diverse lifestyles, and think different thoughts."

"It’s not my type of place, because I’m more of a partier than most people. I was more popular in high school than most people here. I think a lot of people are into studying, but the fraternity I am in does plenty of partying, so I manage. To be honest, if the school wasn’t so good for an education, I would be somewhere else."

"Pittsburgh grows on you, and then you realize that it is a really cool place. Don’t expect it to be like other cities such as New York or Philly, because it’s not. While those cities have a hot downtown, Pittsburgh, because of its history, doesn’t have a great downtown scene, but it has incredible neighborhoods all over the place. Get to them all and check them out; there is some great stuff going on in there."

"I went to a larger university first and then transferred to CMU. I like the small-school atmosphere. You’ll never be in a thousand-person lecture, and you’ll always be able to get in touch with your professor or a TA. It’s the kind of school that if you are ambitious and want to do something, you can do it. From starting a club to bringing a concert or event to campus, CMU is the kind of place that appreciates diversity and unique students and events."
