I’ve had good teachers who actually care; I’ve also had bad ones who couldn’t care less, barely spoke English, and were really inexperienced. On the whole, I think the teachers are pretty average. In bigger classes, the professors are usually pretty good, and the teaching assistants are really helpful.

Overall, students agree that they wouldn’t trade their Pitt experiences for anything else. As with most decisions, however, there are a lot of things to consider. If you don’t like living in the city, Pittsburgh may not be the place for you; while it doesn’t have the huge feel of New York or Philadelphia, the area is definitely urban. Also, Pitt is a large school—you’re in for big lecture classes and a somewhat overwhelming campus during the first year or two, though, everything seems to get smaller after you’ve been around awhile. Weather can be a concern if you’re used to warmer climates, as snow and rain are rules of Pittsburgh winter. This is something you can easily get used to, though, so unless you’re a die-hard warm weather fan, you should do fine.
What Pitt does offer is high-caliber academics, plenty of student organizations, and frequent opportunities such as study abroad, cultural activities, and sports, among many others. If you’re willing to become active on campus, there’s a lot more to Pitt than meets the eye. The University’s location can also be a great advantage—Pittsburgh itself is a positive environment for students, especially because the city is dominated by colleges and universities. The social scene is always jumping, locals are friendly, and there’s always something to do if you explore a little. The best idea is to visit after you’ve applied and try to get a feel for the area. You can get the same quality education at Pitt that you find in many smaller, expensive schools and pay less to have a vibrant city right at your doorstep.

"I love it at Pitt; I wish I was there right now! I know it sounds so corny, but college all goes by so fast."

"Pitt was a great choice. There is enough to do in this city to keep me occupied, and not too much going on so that I stay out of trouble. The teachers have been helpful and have motivated me to do better than I have ever done in school before. If Pitt adds a few more academic programs, it will be the perfect school."

"It’s been good so far. Pitt is a school within a city, but on the downside, there aren’t as many different things to do."

"I have a great sense of pride in my school—I love the University of Pittsburgh, and I always will. I think it is an excellent school with a wide range of fields of study and an immense number of job opportunities in every line of work. No matter what major you choose, you can always walk away with a well-rounded education and great experiences. From partying with friends, to cramming for finals, I wouldn’t trade my time at Pitt for the world. Hail to Pitt!"

"Overall, I would do the Pitt experience all over again. I just graduated and am moving on. I received a very good education, met my fiancé here, made some great friends, always had something to do, and had many opportunities to get involved. I got out of the school what I was willing to put into it."
