Name: Hayley Cruz
Grad Year: 2013
What made you choose your school? UCR was intended to my second choice - I was aiming for a private school - but finances forced me to reconsider my preference. I walked onto campus with some trepidation, having come from a very small school to this quite large one. However, once I began classes, I knew I had come to the right place. The scenery around UCR is especially fantastic, and the weather nearly always perfect [except, of course, during summer].
What activity makes you happy? Watching cartoons with my siblings.
What is your biggest pet peeve? Having to repeat myself.
What is something about you that might surprise someone? I was a cheerleader at the YMCA when I was young.
What is your favorite book, movie, or TV show and why? My favorite book is 'The Neverending Story,' simply because, as the title suggests, it really never ends, and outside of 'Harry Potter,' I've never come across a book more devoted to the importance of love, sacrifice, friendship, and loyalty. My favorite animated movie is 'The Great Mouse Detective', both for nostalgia and a love of Sherlock Holmes. My favorite live-action film is 'Back to the Future', as it's comedic, sci-fi, and touching all at once. My favorite TV show is Monty Python because its humor is wonderfully surreal and unlike anything in the US, and all the Pythons are brilliant.
If you could travel anywhere, where would you go and why? England, due to my love of British history, media, and literature, but really, I'd love to go anywhere.
If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be? Ghostly ones: flight, intangibility, and invisibility. I think the ability to go unnoticed is an underrated asset [anyone who's read Agatha Christie's 'The Hollow', will agree].
If you had a million dollars, how would you spend it? I'd pay off my student loans, give some to my church and family, then travel around the world, Michael Palin-style.
What are your plans for after graduation? Keep writing!
