College Prowler Take

Students love to complain about Baldwin Hall, but after a while it just becomes comfortable, if not comforting. Everyone who works there is really friendly. Although the food can get redundant, it’s nice to have an unlimited meal plan. There is a salad bar open all day at Baldwin. Breakfast there includes a hot meal, fruit, and cereal. Lunch almost always includes a Mexican bar. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, students can use a wok to make their own stir-fry meal. On Waffle Wednesdays, there is a waffle iron with batter, whipped cream, and different fruit toppings. There is a dessert case, a self-serve ice cream bar, and a freezer full of ice cream bars and Popsicles. There is a lot to choose from, but sometimes making your own dish can be the most satisfying.

When Baldwin closes, the only dining option on campus is the Eat Shop. Open until midnight, the Eat Shop specializes in short-order food such as hamburgers, French fries, grilled cheese, and other late night snacks. Each semester, every student is given $25 to use at the Eat Shop. Some say the money goes too fast, but it’s good while it lasts.

Baldwin is getting better, but it still has a long way to go. There isn’t enough day-to-day variety. I love the woks and pizza bar because it allows you to make your own food, but I wish they would give us more stuff to work with so that we could prepare meals to suit our tastes. The Baldwin and Eat Shop staffs are incredibly friendly and helpful. The Eat Shop is great for a late-night snack, but don’t count on getting much to eat if you don’t want it deep fried.

If you’re a frat boy, you live in a house that not only has its own cook, but a fully stocked kitchen open 24/7. Some fraternity members have said that they joined their house in order to eat better than at Baldwin, and in many cases this proves true. The only detriment to eating at a fraternity is that you’re eating and conversing with only your brothers rather than the rest of the campus, which at times can make you feel separated from the rest of the school.

I’d say for cafeteria food, Baldwin isn’t too bad. You just have to mix it up and not eat the same thing all the time, or you get sick of it. The Eat Shop is very yummy, and my $25 always runs out way too fast.

The food is not very pleasant. It is cafeteria food, and that is that. The Eat Shop is nice because it is available late at night, but it’s good to have your own food in the dorm and sometimes go off campus for a meal every now and then.

Though appetizing, Baldwin food forces a student to exhibit restraint in what they choose to eat every day of the week. You can either say no to that bowl of ice cream or that second piece of pizza, or you can say hello to an extra 15 pounds. One benefit of Baldwin is that it allows students to decide what they want to eat, as there is an open salad bar and usually three choices for your desired breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Did You Know?

Stealing dinnerware and trays from Baldwin Hall has become popular over the years, especially in the winter when students like to use the trays as sleds at Victory Park, aka “traying.”

Because of students’ unlimited meal plan, Baldwin staff prohibits students from taking any food outside of the hall. So, if you’re looking for a snack for later, be sure to act natural when stuffing those tiny boxes of cereal into your backpack.
