Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

It’s obvious from walking around campus that Albion is not very diverse. You’ll see mostly upper-class white kids from the suburbs, though there are exceptions. The College is trying hard, but it often seems like Albion College students are not. Most students don’t come from diverse places, and they can be a little closed-minded when it comes to things they aren’t used to. There have unfortunately been a number of racist and homophobic incidents that have occurred on campus. While the College is doing what it can to punish and discourage such acts, its approach can often be underwhelming.

Luckily, there are a lot of student organizations that are taking bigger strides toward diversifying the campus. Break the Silence hosts Coming Out Week every fall, and the Black Student Alliance tries to educate others during Black History Month. The same goes for Albion College Hillel and the Asian Awareness Group. Protests are not uncommon on campus, as the College is fairly politically charged. The College Republicans and Democrats always seem to be at war.

Some, Could Have More.

I hail from a very diverse area in metro Detroit so coming to Albion, it was a little bit of a culture shock. There's a variety of people, yes, but there's not a ton of ethnic diversity. Most are very open to differences in cultures, I just wish there were more.

Diversity

As Albion is a small community, it isn't that diverse. Whites are the majority, but there are a moderate number of African Americans, lots of Asian Americans, and international students from China, Nepal, Greece, and even from a very small country like Myanmar. Though the international student body is still small, it has increased three times as much this year as last year. Plus, our international office is really friendly and tends to work closely with the international students in a personalized way. The office also organizes touring trips and shopping trips for the convenience of the international students. Plus, there are clubs such as Diversity Awareness, and International Student Union for Diversity.

Albion’s about as diverse as you’d expect from an expensive, private, rural, Midwestern school with business as a popular major.
