Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Sometimes people lower their standards in terms of what they’re looking for once they get to Albion. This can be troubling at times, especially during freshman year. Often, students are just looking to hook up at frat parties for whatever reason. Sometimes that can turn out well, but more often than not, it’s just embarrassing come Monday. If you go to a frat party looking to find a meaningful relationship, you’re probably looking in the wrong place. It’s better to meet people in class, Baldwin, the library, or simply put, when you are sober.

Despite the usual complaining, the students at Albion are not unattractive. There is a good mix of people, and you eventually may be able to find what you’re looking for here. Just try not to stereotype people because of who they hang out with or what they look like. You could really miss out.

Typical Mid-Westerners

Most people are friendly, polite, and dress casually. Most are from a middle class to upper middle class background and are from larger Michigan cities or suburbs. At such a small school, it will feel like you know every person. This isn't true. With every new class, you will have the opportunity to meet new people. After four years at Albion, I genuinely like almost everyone I've met.

Strange

Albion, to me, feels strangely cliquey. I feel like people latch onto others either in their program, or in fraternities/sororities, and don't really break out of that. Most students dress casually-- there are a few stand-out characters.

They call them ‘Albion goggles.’ They’re just like beer goggles, but for Albion. Don’t worry, you’ll get a pair if you stay long enough.

Facts

Social Scene

Once at Albion, one may feel incredibly tempted to hit the fraternities right away, mainly because it seems like “the thing” to do. While this may be true, and most students see fraternity parties as the only place to meet new people, sometimes just getting to know other students in your classes works out a little better. If you think about it, becoming friends with students in similar majors is important. Albion is such a small school that you will be spending a lot of time with these people, whether you like it or not.

Hookups or Relationships?

Usually, students prefer to stay out of a relationship their first year or so at Albion. Some consider junior year the “relationship year.” During this year, people start to settle down and think about their future and who they want to spend it with. Surprisingly, hookups are fairly common on such a small campus, which can be awkward come Monday, but most people are pretty mature about it.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

Honestly, the people you meet at fraternity parties are most likely not going to be your friends for life. More often, guys and girls bond with those in their hall or dorm. Being in close quarters just makes it easier. The library, Kellogg Center, or Baldwin are also common spots to see someone you’ve been trying to run into all day.

Dress Code

The dress code varies with the different groups that you are dealing with on campus. You have your kids that roll out of bed and go to class, but for the most part students at Albion try to dress to impress their fellow peers. Expect lots of brands like the Gap, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Express. Goodwill clothes and the vintage styles are also trends that seem to be catching on in some crowds. For those, there is a Goodwill right downtown. For the rest, there’s a mall in Jackson.
