Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

You might want to just skip ahead to the Greek Life section on this one. Nightlife outside of frats doesn’t really exist on campus due to how small the town of Albion is. There are three bars that students will go to occasionally, but drinking among friends at house parties and in dorm rooms or apartments is usually safer and more fun than walking or driving downtown.

Monday night is known as “senior bar night,” so, once you’re old enough, joining friends for a night at the bar can be fun. None of the bars in Albion allow anyone under 21 in after around 10 p.m., so you can try, but few succeed. Wednesday is also a big party night at Albion. The faculty normally has their departments meetings on Thursday mornings, so early classes are rare, which makes more time for partying the night before. Most of the time, if students want to really party, they will go to another college campus or a club in Lansing or Ann Arbor, both about 45 minutes away. Because of this trend, Albion is referred to as a “suitcase college” by those who believe no one can bear to stick around on the weekends. However, in recent years, Union Board has really made an effort to host events for students on the weekends. And there are always the frat parties.

Do you like sitting on a futon in a frat boy’s room with the prerequisite John Belushi or Scarface poster, and drinking while listening to the same hip-hop played on MTV’s TRL? Come to Albion!

There are three bars in Albion: Cascarelli’s, the Phoenix, and Charlie’s. That’s it. Parties have to be sanctioned by the College, and usually all the frats aren’t allowed or are too afraid to throw one, so it’s just kids in rooms.

Parties are sometimes good,...

Parties are sometimes good, sometimes bad. Theme frat parties are generally better, but the ideal way to party at the frats is to find a friend in it and chill in his room. Off-campus parties are not as much fun because you have to get back. The dorms are dangerous since they are cracking down on drinking now.

Bar ListingsWhat's This?

Moonraker Lounge and Restaurant

The Marshall Moonraker has good food and good daily drink specials. There’s karaoke every Friday and Saturday night from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. It’s inexpensive, but then again, so are the majority of the bars on this list.

11401 17 Mile Rd.

Marshall

Fergs’ Parma Pub

Fergs is your typical small-town bar. It’s not really a hangout for many Albion students, which might be appealing to some.

110 W. Michigan Ave.

Parma

Shooters Saloon

Shooters Saloon is about nine miles outside of Albion. They have drink specials every day, and it’s a good place to go if you want to get out of Albion, but just barely.

20985 27 1/2 Mile Rd.

(517) 857-2037

The Phoenix Restaurant and Lounge

Expect to be carded at the door if it’s after 10 p.m. The Phoenix is perhaps the loudest of the three main bars in Albion. If you like to dance and don’t want to go to a fraternity party to do it, the Phoenix is happy to accommodate, especially on the weekends. It can get crowded on busy nights, but there’s more room to move than at Cascarelli’s or Charlie’s, which have more seating area.

207 N. Superior St.

(517) 629-3080

Charlie’s Tavern

Tucked away on a side street off of Superior Street, Charlie’s is the place to go when you want a quieter affair with friends. There is always a good mix of locals and Albion students there. If there is any type of Michigan sporting event going on, you can bet it will be on the big screen.

111 W. Porter St.

(517) 629-9582

Cascarelli’s of Albion

Cascarelli’s is considered the classiest of the bars in Albion, but it’s still a jeans and T-shirt kind of place.

116 S. Superior St.

(517) 629-3675

Country Lanes

Country Lanes is the local bowling alley. Wednesday is the best night to go to find at least one person you know belting out drunken karaoke by the bar. Union Board occasionally hosts events there, and Greek organizations will often host fundraisers or parties there as well.

16653 E. Michigan Ave.

(517) 629-9153

Copper Bar

The Copper Bar is located in downtown Marshall, which is about a 20-minute drive from Albion. If you like peanuts, they roast their own and leave a basket of them on every table. The name comes from the bar itself, which is copper-topped.

What to Do if You're Not 21What's This?

Either hang out in your dorm with friends or hit the frats. It’s sadly as simple as that. The Union Board typically tries to have events planned for at least every other weekend, and they do a good job of bringing a variety of acts and activities to the campus for students. Fraternities also throw the occasional alcohol-free party in the Kellogg Center for underage students. The Coffee House on campus is a great place to go on weekend nights to either hang out or listen to the occasional live band or open mic night.
