Health & Safety:
Alfred is a pretty safe campus. There are sometimes alerts about a guy trying to grab a girl or a fight on the weekends, but overall its safe to walk around. We dont have campus police, but we have Public Safety that employs students, and all they really do it give out parking tickets and bust kids for drinking in their rooms.

The dorms are really bad, old and drafty and infested with bugs.

Guys & Girls:
Average group, a lot of people from the country, a lot of people from new york city. nothing special.

Only three bars, but they offer a good variety. GJs is the 'club', Alex's is a typical hole in the wall bar with a wide selection of beer and pool tables, and Cafe Za's has Ladies Night everynight night. You can usually find house parties during the weekend, but be ready to walk around in the cold to find a good one, you kinda gotta know people.

Not a very big drug scene unless you look for it, mostly in the Art and Design School. If you dont smoke, people dont think youre weird.

Freshman dorms were average. I'm always surprised at how large the rooms are. Some very interesting buildings for living, such as the Brick. Most dorms are fairly close to academic classes, but if you're living in the Suites, Apartments, Ann's House or Joel's House, it's a bit of a hike every morning.

The Art & Design program is truly great. Lots of incredible resources and facilities. Foundations is very tough to get through, but the freedom and professors you have in later studios is worth it. Dining hall/living environments are fairly average, but the majority of the people are very nice, and the campus is beautiful.

End of summer/fall weather is beautiful. It rains A LOT though, and the weather is fairly unpredictable. It gets tough once the snow starts, but as long as you bundle up it's manageable.

Several great food options along Main St., all very close to walk to. Classic diner food at a fairly cheap price at the Jet, and the most delicious Japanese food you can get at Nana's (fairly healthy too). A couple different pizza places, a wonderful (but slightly expensive) coffee shop, and a brand new bakery with delicious meals and baked goods.

Marijuana is fairly common amongst students. Policy enforcement is good- if you are caught you will face some sort of conduct punishment.

Every year in the spring the Entire village of Alfred celebrates Hot Dog Day. It has a carnival atmosphere and is a lot of fun. Even alumni come back and visit with their families. There a usually a lot of parties too.
College Senior 2013-10-21T16:07:16Z
Including dining in nearby villages there are many places to get food and of most kind. There's Chinese food, a sub shop, local diner, bread shop and pizza parlor all in walking distance. While more options exist a bit further.

The football team is really good and they win a lot of playoff games too. Their events usually fill up the bleachers. the other teams are there too.

The residence halls are awesome. The bed is standard issue same as most schools i bet but they are in good shape at the beginning of every semester. Each room comes with cable (TV) and internet (wifi and ethernet). desks to work and BIG closets to hang close or fill with whatever you want. kitchens, and bathrooms are shared. very comfortable.

The math program here is tough but very enjoyable especially with the relationships developed with other students in the field and also professors. The workload is hard but assistance is always available. There are many opportunities to go further in the program, such as "math talks" and club activities, as well as helping other students by tutoring.

The math major is a tough thing to go into. The classes feel like they are going fast, but this is just because they are very thorough and student involved. Teachers are very understanding and will work with you virtually anytime outside of class. They will help you re-learn what you didn't understand in the lecture material, and help you through the homework. My career goals are to be a middle/ high school teacher in mathematics. This college is very persuasive in using the career development center, and the education department gets you really prepared to go out there and get an education position.

Going to be completely honest here, the majority of Alfred University students are white, but there is not a complete lack of diversity. There are many African-American, Asian, and Hispanic students walking around campus. I myself am an Indian student, and can say without hesitation that I have only encountered one other Indian student so far. However, people of various races be not nervous. Even though it may not be the most diverse school, everyone is very accepting and skin is nothing but a color here. The school seems to be pushing cultural diversity, which is great, but there's not much that can be done considering the student population. Nevertheless, if you are considering the school, do not let diversity be an issue, because you will feel right at home with everyone on campus.

Most of the people are okay to be around. They're generally nice.
College Junior 2013-08-26T16:15:11Z
There are apparently too many whites, but there are quite a few students I've met that are foreign exchange and such.
College Junior 2013-08-26T16:14:23Z
For a small town the students sure party a pretty good amount.

Health & Safety:
Public safety and the police are super helpful, but I tripped and got stitches because of their unsafe conditions and such. Also we get reports all the time about students being attacked by alfred state students.

Some professors are very rude, some of them are nice but have crappy classes that you learn nothing in. I always get the books for my classes, but I rarely use them...
College Junior 2013-08-26T16:08:55Z
Some of the professors I've come across are very rude, some of them are really nice but don't teach you much in their classes. I got an A in a class and I didn't learn a single thing in that class.

There are a few fast food places at the State college but in town there are a couple places that are very inexpensive and diverse. The best pizza in town can be found in the local bar Alex's. Nana's Cafe has amazing Japanese cuisine that is all vegetarian unless you want chicken instead of tofu. The Chinese place, Panda, caters to drunk people mostly, it's cheap and the perfect portion for someone who has a hangover or is in fact drunk. Not the best but pretty good. And Terra Cotta has good coffee and pastries, as well as some sandwiches. The Jet is basic diner food. There are others but these are the local staples.

Health & Safety:
Alfred is pretty safe, the only concerns come from the school across the street and the occasional assault on a student (usually involves someone from the State school). Other than that people are more than willing to help if they see you in trouble. The only drinking concern is for the town's holiday weekend known as Hot Dog Day. There is a tremendous amount of drinking that weekend but luckily there are several ambulances on stand-by and several policemen patrolling to make sure everyone is safe.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
