Surrounding Greenery and Effort to Be Green – My school is really great about being green. There are recycling bins in every single hall, and they are regularly taken out. There are two facilities on campus to return cans to for money to help out with college costs. There is even a green dorm, and environmental house. There is even a Green Alfred club that regularly organizes events such as a stuff swap to reduce waste and help out those who maybe can't afford winter boots or microwaves.

Science Center – The science center needs work but other than that every thing is good.

It's aight – The nightlife at Alfred is very repetitive, but fun if you have a good group of friends that want to have fun all the time. Gj's is fun if you like to dance. And I have never been to the bar, but I heard that it was very fun as well. The house parties tend to end early because either way too many people end up at one spot or someone is passed out on the ground...They can be fun tho.

Where Is That? Alfred is a small town that isn't widely known, and is definitely most filled with college students from Alfred University and Alfred State college across the street. While the town is small, the community is connected very well and everyone participates in an annual Hot Dog Day celebration. It's a very safe environment, but you might have to travel a ways to go shopping.

Used to be a well balanced, fun school. Now its lame. Yes, if you look, I went to Alfred way back in the late 80's and early 90's. Some things have not changed:
- The weather still SUCKS 90% of the year
- The hilly terrain will keep you in shape, if it doesn't kill you first
- Its still in the middle of NOwhere, with nothing much nearby except Hornell (woo hoo) a half hour drive away.
- Townies still regularly get cranky at the students
- Alex's bar is still there :-) (Wait, thats a good thing)
But many other things that used to make the above tolerable (and even make them worth joking about) have changed:
- AU has become a two-major school, with little diversity outside Engineering (always has been big) and Art.
- With the decline and elimination of the Greek system at AU there is literally NO real social life anymore. The greeks added diversity and dare I say FUN to an otherwise dreary school. (and to be clear, I was not a greek myself, but knew many students who were. It was far more fun and INclusive back then... believe it or not.)
- AU has lost it's way in terms of allowing students to grow, learn, and expand their social and personal horizons. Too much handholding from the student life office now a days. It's OK to make some bad choices while in college, not everything has to be preplanned and prepared for. Geez, let kids be kids for 4 years. They generally will learn to grow up.
In summary, if you like being isolated, are a big artie/hippie or engineer, and really like being out in the middle of nowhere, go for it. My kids (all three) won't be attending my alma matter. It's too bad really, I had a GOOD time, but I can see for myself (and have heard from recent students) why its just not the same anymore.

The weather at Alfred is atrocious. It rains nonstop. There always seems to be a cloud over the town...when you leave, it's seemingly always sunny in neighboring towns, but not here. The valley makes for atrocious, cold winters and rainy autumn and springtimes.

I wish we were more competitive than division III--however the football team is dedicated and an important part of our culture at AU. We do not have a competitive baseball team however; just a club team. I think this could use some more investment.

The dorms are adequate. There are kitchens, good facilities, hangout rooms in dorms. THe cost is a little high, and RAs are a little invasive. However, the housing sign up process is convenient and residence life is helpful. I would recommend it.

Simple but Nice – The school is located in a remote environment which isolates students from much of the world. However, the freedom of expression and the promotion of student involvement and leadership in the school's management have helped breed independence and confidence in graduates.

The hilly campus poses difficulties in finding convenient parking. Most students park their vehicles far from their housing. The little space available is always struggled for.

Alfred is in the middle of nowhere. If you want to go to Walmart everyday bring your own car. Or ride the bus which only goes to Hornell and seems to be inconveniently placed during all of my classes. Its a good thing I don't want to go any place.

Guys & Girls:
All of the people at Alfred are friendly so you won't have a hard time chatting anybody up. There are a ton of different styles because of all the majors afford. Classy looking business majors, tired looking engineers, and grungy art students.

Ade Vs Powell – So there are two dining halls on campus and everyone claims one is better then the other but whatever. I prefer Powell because it has breakfast in the morning but its not open on the weekends which sucks. If you're a vegetarian or like to eat on the healthier side then this is a good place for you. Its not the best food in the world but I miss sitting and talking to friends for hours over pizza.

I Love It Here – If I had the money I would even stay for the summers at Alfred. Everyone is friendly and welcoming. My friends are there, my art is there, and I don't have to make my own food. I have enjoyed all of my professor and classes. It just feels like home.

Not Strict Enough – Lately it seems that drinking has gotten out of hand, especially with the freshmen. I can't believe the number of students who are passed out and yet are still aloud to go to classes on Monday. Maybe the fines should be higher for being caught with alcohol while under age. I'm not so much against drinking but these kids need to learn responsibility.

Campus Events – I find the campus events pretty amazing. A new movie every Friday night for only $2. Comedians, bands, and performers are booked all the time for us to enjoy and they are usually free. For a couple of bucks towards a club or good cause there are late night dances and club events. So if you're underage or not a party goer like me then you don't have to worry about being stuck in the dorms with the amount of things to do for free.

THE DORMS – I really hate the dorm at Alfred university. They have RA'S that want to treat you like children, and dirty people who can't clean u after themselves on the weekends the restrooms are horrible. On the weekends there is nothing to do but the the same things over and over again. Since so many people are local they go home dont he weekends making the school feel lonely.

Health & Safety:
Alfred is so small I feel safe no matter what. I am out and about two three even four in the morning without any worry. Crime in Alfred?? Never even really hear about any of that stuff.

Coming from Los Angeles I'm accustomed to dining at amazing restaurants. I love food international cuisines are my favorite. Alfred extremely lacks places to eat. You really have to hunt down if you want anything fancy and even then you have to drive miles away.

There is only one bus that runs to Hornell Daily to take students to the supermarket. No other need for transportation.

AU Housing Options – The pine hill suites are nice and comfortable, but you have to walk up a big hill. The upper class apartments are bigger and more conveniently located. Isolated living at on campus houses is also an option. Many students move off campus after two years.

my father lost his job and I'm not directly dealing with the process myself but I haven't been able to receive any more aid since then. I want work study but I can't seem to get it. I'm working on it.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
