Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Bashing the cafeteria food is a national pastime at colleges across America. However, students admit that the food in Alfred’s cafeteria is actually pretty good! AU Dining Services’ menus are award-winning. Recently, AU earned third place in the Small Colleges and Universities Division from the National Association of Colleges and Universities Food Services.

At both Ade and Powell Dining Hall, students have the option of burgers and fries, pizza, a soup and salad bar, deli, or roast. There’s also a feature entrée daily. Ever had spanakopita? We even host guest chefs and caterers from nearby restaurants. The only hitch is that the same menu every week can be monotonous. Also, the dismal offering of vegetarian/vegan choices is inexcusable. Other options are the Little Alf Café and Ade Express, which offer smoothies, wraps, and grill items. You can only use cash or Dining Dollars, but they’re open until midnight, and you can get a burger just the way you want it.

Ade Vs Powell

So there are two dining halls on campus and everyone claims one is better then the other but whatever. I prefer Powell because it has breakfast in the morning but its not open on the weekends which sucks. If you're a vegetarian or like to eat on the healthier side then this is a good place for you. Its not the best food in the world but I miss sitting and talking to friends for hours over pizza.

Powell Vs Ade

Though it is debated, Powell tends to be held in higher esteem than Ade. The food is decent in the beginning of year but after four of five months you get tired of the same foods. They have been trying to make it better, buying from local farms and the student community garden. The company who provides the dining service is AVI. Overall it is better than some schools but not your mothers cooking. There are four of five places in town to get food, plus lots of places in Wellsville and Hornell. If you have a car you are better off. There are also places to cook in the upperclassmen dorms. A plus is the late night options open til 12 or later on weekdays and later on weekends.

It was half good. It was decent...

It was half good. It was decent for a university of that size. Nothing too outrageous, but pretty accessible for everybody. Although, I think it was funny that they tried to have Kosher food for Passover, and then they served quiche!

Did You Know?

When it snows, Alfred students will steal the cafeteria trays and use them to go sledding on the huge hill behind the Miller Performing Arts Center.

Students can use their ID cards to swipe in vending machines, so they don’t have to use their own money.

Students can request bag meals if they are unable to eat during dining hall hours. All students have to do is let a dining manager know a day in advance and a bagged meal will be ready whenever they are needed.

If a student is not feeling well and can’t make it to a meal, a sick meal program is available, as long as it is approved by the Health Center. Just send a roommate or friend with your meal card to a manager, and they will get the approved meal.

Powell dining room is equipped for cooking classes taught by AU chefs for any students willing to learn the art of cooking.

Students can use block meals to treat family or friends that are visiting to meals in the dining halls.
