Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

It’s hard to explain exactly how diversity manifests itself at Alfred University. Certainly a school with a minority population of less than 10 percent can’t claim to be all that diverse. However, anyone walking along Academic Alley today would see smiling faces from a variety of ethnicities and nationalities. Minority student groups bring an unmistakable vibrancy to campus life. It is fair to say that the small numbers of blacks, Latinos, and Asians that are on campus are well integrated into the campus community as a whole. Also, the admissions department has been fervently seeking to diversify the student body and it shows.

The problem with diversity at Alfred is that there’s just not enough of anyone here because there’s just so few of everyone to begin with. Also, the surrounding area is overwhelmingly white and rural, so for minority students, most of whom arrive from urban areas like New York and Rochester, the culture shock can be alienating. Meal times on campus are still segregated. At the only dance club in town, half of Alfred’s student population crams itself onto a tiny dance floor in a crisply defined ying-yang pattern. So Allegany County is no melting pot. The bottom line is that Alfred students have to substitute individuality for diversity. At Alfred, you’re unique, just like everybody else.

Diversity Is Key

At Alfred University we've got a lot of diversity. Not only are our American students diverse, we've got a lot of international students as well. People from all over the country come to this school, so we've got a lot of differences in economic backgrounds, we've got a lot of diversity in ethnicity and race, we've got people who don't have the same religious beliefs, we've got gays, lesbians, and transgender students, and we're still one big family. We're huge on acceptance. We've got a club/organization called Drawn to Diversity where they work with all different types of students to come up with solutions that involve acceptance.

Facts

Gay Pride

GLBT students have a great support system at Alfred. Spectrum, the GLBT group, is a force to be reckoned with on campus. Recently, they petitioned to keep the reggae artist Elephant Man from performing at Alfred because lyrics on his discography were violently homophobic. They won. It caused a great controversy, and it even made headlines in the UK! On a lighter note, they throw a spectacular party called Glam Slam in Davis Gym every year. It's one of the most anticipated events all year.

Political Activity

Apathy is a big problem at AU. The campus is just so cut off from the outside world that nothing really seems to make an impact. There have been spurts of activity, however, and there are clubs such as Students for Social Change, College Democrats, and College Republicans.

Economic Status

There certainly is economic diversity at Alfred. Ninety percent of all students at Alfred University receive some form of financial aid. This is one of the University's main selling points. Still, there are a good number of over-privileged under-achievers (mostly in the liberal arts college;hey, someone had to say it!).

Most Common Religions

The two main religious groups on campus are BASIC and Varsity Interfaith.

Minority Clubs on Campus

Alfred University just wouldn't have been the same without the ALANA (African Latino Asian and Native American ) organizations. Although these groups make up a small part of the population, they are the most visible groups on campus. Poder Latino and UMOJA have the biggest events. They also have the best food.
