Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

One might think that a campus like Alfred would be driven to drug use simply for the lack of activities. On the contrary, Alfred students seem much more interested in innovating new and dangerous winter sports than getting high. Don’t get it twisted, we’re champion drinkers. Purchasing your own mug from Alex’s is a right of passage. Still, although alcohol and marijuana are big on the weekends, most students leave them there.

It would appear that the most prominent drug use occurs in the art school. Here, substances are welcomed by a certain crowd as creative stimulants. The rest of the population, however, seems to fare well enough without it. The great thing about Alfred is that there’s very little peer pressure to get into, well, anything, drugs included.

Alfred on the Social Lubrication

There is a lot of pot smoking going around Alfred. Not that it is a huge detrimental aspect to the University, just an observation that I have had. Being an RA you get to see some of the behind the scenes things going on around campus. Just like any other college or university, there will be pot and alcohol. Peer Pressure is a shadowy subject, you do not necessarily see it but I am sure it must go on. Policy enforcement is more of an action to keep people safe and to ensure that no one is endangering themselves or others. We really have a great system at Alfred. The alcohol definitely takes the trump card on visibility and in general consumption. Needless to say any more, at Alfred you can be who you are, whether that is a straight edge student, a pot smoker, or a social drinker..no one really judges you.

If You Want It, You Will Find It.

This is less about the campus, and more about the individual. Just like at any other campus, if a student wants to find a drug culture, they will be able to. this does not mean they have to however, and I have never felt pressured at Alfred.

Always Available, Never Hindering the Academic Experience

If you want something, it is there. If you don't, you would hardly know anyone deleves into it. In a place like Alfred, it is recreational. I would say there is zero peer pressure, but I am sure in some small circles there is.
