Favorite Things To Do
Alfred students love a diversion, and they respond enthusiastically to campus events. Any type of artistic spectacle is always well attended. Theater and dance performances usually sell out. Senior Shows in the School of Art and Design (Harder Hall) is the biggest campus-wide event and draws people from all over. Clubs and extracurricular activities are also something we do very well here at Alfred. There are over 100 clubs and organizations, and new ones are formed every year. Some of the most popular organizations are ALANA, Student Activities, the FIAT, AUTV, DISC, and Habitat for Humanity.
From November to April, you can play in the snow. Really! Grab a tray and hurl yourself down the big hill behind the Miller Performing Arts Center. It's a time-honored tradition. Kayaking down in the buff is also catching on. If you prefer a more traditional workout, you can head to McLane Fitness Center. On Saturday nights, “Midnight at McLane” keeps the gym open after hours. Students can work out, play games, or just chill. There’s tons of free pizza and pop. Outdoor stuff is hard because the weather is so crazy, but the snowboarders love it. There are also hiking trails, and the weather doesn’t stop the Forest People from planning outdoor expeditions. Lots of people like to kill time in Powell Campus Center. You can grab a bite at Lil’ Alf Café and check your e-mail. There’s also a big screen TV downstairs by the mailroom. Students frequently hook their game systems up to it. Generally, Alfred forces you to invent new pastimes. There’s a saying that “if you’re bored, then you’re boring.” At Alfred, if you’re bored, then you’re normal, but that just means you have to challenge your creative facilities.
