Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The facilities on campus seem to be similar to that of many other campuses. We have new and old buildings. The best part about the old buildings is that they are reminiscent of times long past, as many have a medieval feel. There is even a castle on campus. Many think the gyms need to be modernized, and this is true to some extent, but a better alternative is to build a new one. The Davis Gym houses the oldest indoor track in the nation and stands as a testament to the days of dumbbells and medicine balls. Most are willing to put up with this in order to keep a vital piece of 1920s American history around.

There are two libraries on campus, which should more than fill your need for information. Both libraries are situated towards the middle of campus, so it doesn’t matter which side of campus you live on. If you’re looking for something to do on the weekend, there is always a movie to catch in the Nevins Theatre. It is located in the Arthur and Lea Powell Campus Center. Some of the newest movies are shown every Friday and Saturday night for a mere $3, which is practically stealing.

Historic

A number of the buildings on campus have been around since it opened. The student service center is in an old, renovated castle, which is pretty awesome. The dorms could use some updating, and there have been a number of issues with technological services---like shoddy wireless service and temperamental public computers. Overall the campus is absolutely beautiful, but there isn't much to do otherwise because, in Alfred, the colleges ARE THE TOWN. Literally.

Surrounding Greenery and Effort to Be Green

My school is really great about being green. There are recycling bins in every single hall, and they are regularly taken out. There are two facilities on campus to return cans to for money to help out with college costs. There is even a green dorm, and environmental house. There is even a Green Alfred club that regularly organizes events such as a stuff swap to reduce waste and help out those who maybe can't afford winter boots or microwaves.

Favorite Things To Do

Alfred students love a diversion, and they respond enthusiastically to campus events. Any type of artistic spectacle is always well attended. Theater and dance performances usually sell out. Senior Shows in the School of Art and Design (Harder Hall) is the biggest campus-wide event and draws people from all over. Clubs and extracurricular activities are also something we do very well here at Alfred. There are over 100 clubs and organizations, and new ones are formed every year. Some of the most popular organizations are ALANA, Student Activities, the FIAT, AUTV, DISC, and Habitat for Humanity.

From November to April, you can play in the snow. Really! Grab a tray and hurl yourself down the big hill behind the Miller Performing Arts Center. It's a time-honored tradition. Kayaking down in the buff is also catching on. If you prefer a more traditional workout, you can head to McLane Fitness Center. On Saturday nights, “Midnight at McLane” keeps the gym open after hours. Students can work out, play games, or just chill. There’s tons of free pizza and pop. Outdoor stuff is hard because the weather is so crazy, but the snowboarders love it. There are also hiking trails, and the weather doesn’t stop the Forest People from planning outdoor expeditions. Lots of people like to kill time in Powell Campus Center. You can grab a bite at Lil’ Alf Café and check your e-mail. There’s also a big screen TV downstairs by the mailroom. Students frequently hook their game systems up to it. Generally, Alfred forces you to invent new pastimes. There’s a saying that “if you’re bored, then you’re boring.” At Alfred, if you’re bored, then you’re normal, but that just means you have to challenge your creative facilities.
