Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Because of hazing and alcohol-related events, Alfred no longer has any fraternities or sororities. The Board of Trustees met early in 2002 and decided that the Greek life on campus was no longer coinciding with the mission of the school. Because students were getting hurt and some relationships with the community were also hurt, the Board felt that the benefits of Greek life were outweighed by the negative events.

The question now concerns the social life of Alfred students. The Greek houses will eventually turn into special-interest houses, giving students a sense of community, a sense of responsibility, and a chance to take on leadership roles. Events that are planned through special-interest housing will increase communication with the community, as well as with other students, which is much safer than drunken hazing events.
