Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Guys? They’re pretty sloppy and a touch androgynous (even the jocks). Girls? They’re pretty sloppy and a touch androgynous. What can I say? We’ve got a huge art department. It’s rumored that Playboy magazine once rated Alfred University as having the ugliest girls. It’s a rumor, of course. There are very attractive people to be found on campus (although it’s hard to tell under all those layers). The men’s swim team, for instance, seems to be getting quite a bit of buzz.

Also, there is no “Alfred type;” however, there is such a thing as an “Alfred couple.” Unlikely matches are common here, probably because you’ll discover a person’s personality long before you ever see a midriff, and you better believe that people are hooking up. We’re all just up here doing our own thing and trying to keep warm; and nothing keeps you warmer than, well, doing your thing!

Diverse, Athletic, Disproportionate

There is a very DIVERSE population of people at Alfred University from varying religions, races/ethnicities, sexualities, amd religious backgrounds. On top of that, people hold very different interests in several different extracurricular and social subjects--more or less there is someone for everyone! However, I've noticed there are a lot of ATHLETIC people from over 8 different sports. Also, the gender split seems to favor dudes over ladies, with what I would guess is about a 65%/35% split between guys and girls.

oh boy

The boys here are hott at least the football players are....The rest are ehh. All they want to do is hook up which can be annoying, but if thats your thing then you will fit in well.

People

All of the people at Alfred are friendly so you won't have a hard time chatting anybody up. There are a ton of different styles because of all the majors afford. Classy looking business majors, tired looking engineers, and grungy art students.

Social Scene

There's an event in the first week of school called the Block Party, where all the clubs and organizations set up tables and displays for the freshmen. It's also a good time for the upperclassmen to get an eyeful of the untainted newcomers who are also on display. Everyone will know who you are within a week. If you feel like you're under surveillance for a little while, it's because you are, especially in the lunch room. Smile and say hi.

Hookups or Relationships?

Casual hookups are plentiful at Alfred. It's the most popular indoor sport. Unfortunately, if privacy or quality is important to you, you may be bound for more than a few types of frustration. Long-lasting relationships are hard to come by here. Campus life is so mundane, students look to dating to help break up the monogamy—uh, I mean monotony.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

Since we're all so tightly packed onto this academic island, it's not hard to meet people. Just go to class, attend campus events, get involved with extracurricular activities, and you're bound to meet someone. Many students find it easier to slip into bed with the lubrication of a good libation. For this, they flock to GJ’s or Alex’s. The only problem is that there’s very little variety. In fact, although there is a general disdain on the University campus for the Alfred State students across the street, many a desperate AU student has been spotted furtively dragging themself home at an ungodly hour.

Dress Code

No mater how AU students do themselves up, there's always one underlying theme. Yep—long johns. (Get it? Underlying?!) It's an unbelievably segregated campus, however, and trends vary by discipline. The art students enjoy Carharts, denim, and Salvation Army finds. Scarves! Cheap sturdy fabrics accented with a bit of color are always stylish. The liberal arts students are keeping Abercrombie & Fitch in business, unless of course they're some of the urban kids who won't be seen without a brand new pair of sneakers (every day!) and a few conspicuous name brands. Sigh. Then there are the hippies. Boots. Hemp. Tie-dye. It's all very embarrassing. There are also interesting pockets of fashion. One group of guys was famous for their signature post-WWI army-issued pea coats.
