Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most upperclassmen prefer to live off campus. All the traditional college houses are old Victorians that have been thoroughly lived in but poorly kept. Some popular pits off campus are the Alamo, the Octagon House, #7 and house #17. Be warned, however: anyone residing in one of these is expected to throw good parties. One of the most coveted houses off campus is house #17. Traditionally an art house, it’s decorated with neon work from previous students. Whoever lives at #17 is also responsible for hosting the party for Senior Shows in the big backyard. Rumor has it that only real ‘art stars’ get to live there, so kudos if you land it!

Renting an apartment off campus is also an option. There are apartments above the stores on Main Street and a brand new development that feels a lot like a dorm. There are also condominium-like structures about a mile off campus. All of these options are a bit more expensive, but certainly newer and less likely to collapse. No matter where you chose to live in Alfred, the good news is that it’s all very affordable and very close. Students enjoy the proximity and convenience of living on campus with the freedom of a private residence.

There are a decent number of apartments, very cheep, even to live on main street, but they can be very poor quality. Some landlords are great, some are horrible, most are decent to rent from.

The school does have seminars and offers a list of landlords who let them know what they have available.

Off campus isn’t that far, so you’re so close to being on campus, except with the privacy and the freedom of your own place.
