Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most upperclassmen prefer to live off campus. All the traditional college houses are old Victorians that have been thoroughly lived in but poorly kept. Some popular pits off campus are the Alamo, the Octagon House, #7 and house #17. Be warned, however: anyone residing in one of these is expected to throw good parties. One of the most coveted houses off campus is house #17. Traditionally an art house, it’s decorated with neon work from previous students. Whoever lives at #17 is also responsible for hosting the party for Senior Shows in the big backyard. Rumor has it that only real ‘art stars’ get to live there, so kudos if you land it!

Renting an apartment off campus is also an option. There are apartments above the stores on Main Street and a brand new development that feels a lot like a dorm. There are also condominium-like structures about a mile off campus. All of these options are a bit more expensive, but certainly newer and less likely to collapse. No matter where you chose to live in Alfred, the good news is that it’s all very affordable and very close. Students enjoy the proximity and convenience of living on campus with the freedom of a private residence.

Off-Campus Living

As an RA, and a student with a housing grant, I've never really felt the urge to live off campus, until my senior year. But all my friends live off campus. And unlike a lot of cities and other schools, our off-campus living is relatively cheap. I mean Alfred is a very small town, a lot of people have never even heard of us, but the people in the town rent out houses to students. So you can have 3 or more people sometimes living in a house, which brings down the cost of living even more, which is really good.

Off Campus Housing

The housing policy keeps changing, and it's not always for the better. They now require students to live on campus for 3 years, making the senior year very competitive for living off campus. Some juniors are able to live off campus but they're not notified until June/July, when all seniors have already secured their housing, making very few options for juniors. Many students also therefore do not have the option of looking at available places because they're not local. The on campus housing is in decent shape and are at decent locations, but its really difficult to host night events because publi safety is very strict about noise complaints. Off campus is much easier for late night parties.
