Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Parking has been the subject of many frustrated editorials. It’s become a real problem for both students and faculty. Underclassmen are allowed to bring cars, so parking is at a premium. Overall, parking on campus is sufficient, but not to be confused with convenient. There are parking lots and spaces on campus streets for student-only parking, but don’t expect to find a space close to your classroom or residence hall. Also, it’s a hilly campus, so the five- to ten-minute walk from parking lots to campus destinations can be a work out. The AU Web site describes it as “invigorating . . . especially in winter!” Thanks guys.

Despite the hassle, you might as well bring your car anyway, in which case you must purchase a parking permit from the Campus Safety Office. The yearly fee is $50 per vehicle. You can register yours during orientation or at any time during the semester.

Expensive, but Parking Is Everywhere

The permit cost was a bit expensive, but you can park almost anywhere around campus. Parking is a little sparse around the dorms, but otherwise it's good. Technically you don't need a car, with your ID you can ride the bus to the nearest chain grocery stores, and there's a mom and pop grocery shop just off campus, called Kinfolk. A car is really only needed if you live close enough to visit family. Everything on campus is within walking distance. If you just want to get around campus, a bike is better, and there are bike hubs everywhere on campus!

Competitive Parking

The hilly campus poses difficulties in finding convenient parking. Most students park their vehicles far from their housing. The little space available is always struggled for.

Alfreds Parking.

Parking permits are expensive. There are never any open spots near where I live. However there is a lot of parking, just a good distance away. Public Safety is very anal about giving out tickets.
