Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

AU Admissions insists that you do not need a car at Alfred. They’re right. You don’t need a car at Alfred. You also don’t need both your legs, but you see how it could become an issue of convenience. Getting around at AU is actually very simple. You’ll find you won’t need to leave town too often, but if you do find yourself needing to get out of dodge and without a car, there are ways to get around. Anything downtown is accessible on foot. Unless you are unfortunate enough to have to park your car, all your classes are only a few minutes away. In some cases, you walk out the front door of your residence hall and you’re there.

If you have business in the nearby towns, you can take the HUB or ACT buses. Buses don’t run very frequently, so this mode of transportation is only good for those commuting into town. The HUB goes local to Alfred, Almond, and Hornell. The ACT services Belmont, Olean, and other parts of Allegany County. If you would like to venture a little further out, AU Venture Vans make monthly trips to Buffalo and Rochester. These are great opportunities to shop. Going home for break? The AU shuttle runs to the airport for $20. There is also a ride board that is surprisingly efficient. For the most part, Alfred students walk, drive, or bum rides. I strongly recommend bringing your own car. There are other methods of getting around, but it’s the most convenient way to get around up here. Also, driving the winding, deserted back roads of Allegany County is great for recreation. Stick shifts welcome!

A for Effort

Alfred is in the middle of nowhere. The nearest grocery store (besides the Dollar Tree) is thirty minutes away. So if you have a car you would think you would be stranded and lost in the vast nothingness that consumes the itty bitty town of Alfred. However, the town does a great job providing an easy to comprehend schedule for buses to take you to and from Hornell for all of your shopping and grocery needs.

Nowhere

Alfred is in the middle of nowhere. If you want to go to Walmart everyday bring your own car. Or ride the bus which only goes to Hornell and seems to be inconveniently placed during all of my classes. Its a good thing I don't want to go any place.

Transportation

There is only one bus that runs to Hornell Daily to take students to the supermarket. No other need for transportation.
