AU Admissions insists that you do not need a car at Alfred. They're right—you don't need a car at Alfred. You also don't need both your legs, but you see how it could become an issue of convenience. Getting around at AU is actually very simple. You'll find you won't need to leave town too often, but if you do find yourself needing to get out of Dodge and without a car, there are ways to get around. Anything downtown is accessible on foot. Unless you are unfortunate enough to have to park your car, all of your classes are only a few minutes away. In some cases, you walk out the front door of your residence hall, and you're there.
If you have business in the nearby towns, you can take the HUB or ACT buses. Buses don't run very frequently, so this mode of transportation is only good for those commuting into town. The HUB goes local to Alfred, Almond, and Hornell. The ACT services Belmont, Olean, and other parts of Allegany County. If you would like to venture a little further out, AU Venture Vans make monthly trips to Buffalo and Rochester. These are great opportunities to shop. For the most part, Alfred students walk, drive, or bum rides. Also, driving the winding, deserted back roads of Allegany County is great for recreation. Stick shifts welcome!
