Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

A joke about Alfred is that students should carry a red balloon so that people could find them under the snow. I discovered that this joke isn’t altogether wrong. It snows so often and in such volume that the landscape is always white and sparkling. The good news is that it’s actually a very gentle precipitation. Big fat juicy snowflakes fall softly as opposed to stingy ice flecks that may sting your face in Boston or New York. It’s beautiful; it just tends to lose its charm sometime around April. Warm weather at Alfred is spectacular. The landscape and the wildlife just burst forth into green and Technicolor.

Alfred students have mastered the art of layering. Thanks to our proximity to the North Pole and something called “lake effect,” you can pretty much count on any type of weather at any time during the year. It changes hourly as well. You may have a perfectly sunny day in March, then hail later that night. Most likely you’ll be buried in snow for most of the year. It’s not uncommon to have snow on graduation day, either. Still, an Indian summer may last until November. So don’t discriminate, just bring everything!

Weather in Alffred

The weather at Alfred is atrocious. It rains nonstop. There always seems to be a cloud over the town...when you leave, it's seemingly always sunny in neighboring towns, but not here. The valley makes for atrocious, cold winters and rainy autumn and springtimes.

You're gonna be cold, man.

Some freshmen come to this school excited for snow and can't wait until the first snowfall. They will leave this place with a very different opinion.

Admissions will tell you not to worry about the snow because there are heated sidewalks. This is mostly a lie. Only certain sidewalks are heated, and they're probably not where you live.

If you aren't somewhat fond of winter, you probably shouldn't come here. It's not a happy place.
