Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Allegheny's tagline is "unusual combinations." It's common to meet an English major who minors in biology or a physics major who minors in dance. Because Allegheny wants students to be well-rounded graduates, the College embeds the "unusual combinations" mantra into the curriculum by requiring students to major in one area of study and minor in another. For example, a student with a major in English could not minor in art because both studies are in humanities. Students wanting to work around that system can design their own major (such as cinematic storytelling or sustainable agriculture) and pick classes appropriate to that major.

At Allegheny College, academics are first priority. Classes can become quite competitive, but that doesn’t keep students from working together. Schoolwork often becomes a kind of social event, where people get together to study, work on homework, or proofread papers. The professors also fit into this academic and social hybrid, going out of their way to help students both in and out of class. It is clear that most instructors love teaching and really want to share what they know with students. Professors also look at students as friends by providing them with advice or just listening to their problems. While the College excels in all areas of study, it has a history of excellence in science, churning out many students who go on to attend grad school for biology or biochemistry, as well as medical school. With many students pursuing pre-med at the beginning of their academic careers, the natural science program is tailored to start with challenging courses to weed out pre-med students who aren't prepared to put in the work. Every major, though, is academically challenging and requires an incredible amount of work and commitment.

Creative Writing Program

There really isn't anything particularly special about any particular major at Allegheny. Everyone is encouraged to choose a unique and "unusual combinations." It is not uncommon at all to see students majoring in Neuroscience and minoring in Art History. Or even double-majoring with the two. Because of this, the faculty and professors are very devoted to helping each individual rather than the program. The workload is intense, as it is with all programs here but the professors are exceptionally knowledgeable and accomplished, making even the most difficult of classes enjoyable.

Difficult, but Kind

We work hard at Allegheny, but even though our professors are piling on work they are always helpful. I have never met a Professor at Allegheny who wasn't willing to help me with any problems I had. This school can beat you down sometimes, but it is generally a great place to be.

Difficult, Personalized Education

The academics here at Allegheny are quite hard, especially compared to larger universities. However, the professors truly push you to reach your full potential. Allegheny is not a large research university, but because of this, there are so many opportunities for undergraduate research and teaching assistant jobs. This gives me experience to get an internship and eventually a job.

Did You Know?

Allegheny has an Honor Code. As part of the code, students have to sign every assignment they hand in as a sign that they have not plagiarized or cheated in any way. The benefit of this code, however, is that most tests are not proctored, and students are allowed to take their tests anywhere in a particular building.

During a student’s senior year, Allegheny College requires the completion of a semester-long project, either original research or an original creative work in the student’s major field. This project is designed to demonstrate that every Allegheny student is capable of completing a large project, able to work independently in a timely manner, and compute and communicate information.
