Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

In terms of athletics, Allegheny is a Division III school, but some might describe the College as just plain "divisive." Although many of the College's varsity sports are competitive, it's likely that the rest of campus hasn't a clue as to which teams are doing well each season. Allegheny has simply never been a college where the primary focus is athletics, nor does it offer many scholarships for sports. However, the sports and recreation center is usually abuzz throughout the day with club or intramural practices. A prospective student walking through the athletic facilities could definitely run into a fencing lesson, a pick-up game of dodgeball, or get pulled into the squash courts for some one-on-one.

The school has made an effort to bring more school spirit to games by giving out free T-shirts and establishing "Gold Rush" games (where students are encouraged to wear gold); these efforts have only partially been successful. What does set Allegheny apart is the amount of faculty who join intramural teams and enjoy playing against the students. If you love sports, you will definitely be able to play, and you'll make great friends on your team. Unfortunately, though, the stands likely won't be filled with hundreds of screaming fans wearing gold and blue.

Great School Spirit

Even though Allegheny is a small school there is a lot of school spirit whenever there are sport events. And for the sport facilities they are great for everyone, for both athletes and non-athletes.

Don't Impact Campus

A large portion of the student body does atheletics but there is no sense of school pride in supporting the teams here. Cross Country and Track are the only two programs I'm aware of that have any consistent success.

Sports Are Pretty Average Here

The sports teams are pretty average here, and it's never a surprise when they finish around .500. The Track and Field/Cross country teams are dominant however. Fans do not really go to many sporting events unless they are really good friends with a member of the team or are dating someone on it.

Most Popular Sports

Varsity basketball and football are the most popular among fans, and track and football seem to be the most popular to play. Most intramural sports are pretty popular, as well, especially ultimate Frisbee.

Most Overlooked Teams

Most teams at Allegheny are overlooked.

School Spirit

Most students don’t have school spirit in the “sports nut” sense of the word, but many are proud that they go to Allegheny for the academic reputation. People that play on the sports teams will sometimes show a little more school spirit than the rest, but even they don’t seem that peppy about it. Although you will see the occasional person wearing an Allegheny sweatshirt on campus, you’ll never see much more than that—not even during a big event.

Getting Tickets

Tickets are required for basketball and football games and are purchased at the door.

Best Place to Take a Walk

Woodcock Park, the Wise Center, around town

Did You Know? Allegheny students recently created a club sport in Quidditch named "Dumbledore's Army."
