Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Allegheny is a pretty chill place. A lot of things operate on the honor system. Buildings are left open late at night, and there isn’t one security camera or burglar alarm. However, there is a system set up so that in an emergency situation (à la Virginia Tech), a mass e-mail/text message is sent out to the students from the Security Office.

Security on campus is most concerned with the students’ rights and creating an environment that stresses personal responsibility and trust. The flipside of that is that theft does happen. Allegheny students are not the only ones who can walk into open buildings; things go missing from sports lockers or unlocked cars every once in a while. Whatever it is you’re trying to get away with, if you’re smart, you won’t get caught. Don’t go to really loud parties if you’re underage and don’t get so drunk that you’ll look drunk walking home. If the party spills out onto the lawn, don’t go anywhere near it. It’s bound to be busted within the next 10 to 15 minutes.

Just Enough

Allegheny is Strict enough to keep things from getting dangerous, but they are so strict as to seriously impede anyone's fun.

Personal Responsibilty Is Taken Seriously

Allegheny has its own honor code that is enforced by the students and agreed upon by the faculty. Any violation of the code is taken seriously and has strict/severe ramifications. Social conduct is a little less severe. Most incidents are documented but students are often given a warning before serious action happens.

Punishments Aren't Too Bad

Usually RAs will not write you up for drinking or being drunk in the dorm rooms the first time or two per semester. And if you do get written up, you usually only have to do some community service and talk to a counselor.
