Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Nearly 90 percent of the student population is white. Diversity is something that Allegheny students seem to want on campus, yet it is simply not the case. The College is very small and seems to attract mostly well-off Caucasians from Pittsburgh and Cleveland. There are people from around the country, but even they are rare. There are students of every race on campus, but they are truly a minority. In most classes, there might be one or two non-white students. Yet, despite their small numbers, minority groups on campus are very vocal. There is always some kind of event going on to celebrate a culture or to raise awareness and acceptance. The College faculty and administration are very supportive of these groups, as are the students.

There have been incidents where intolerance has been the subject of much debate, manifesting itself in angry editorials in The Campus newspaper and forum discussions in the Campus Center. The administration encourages the campus to continue the discussion and work through issues as a community.

Lack of Diversity

Quite simply, there is not much diversity on campus. The vast majority of students are caucasion and straight. However, there is little to no discrimination on campus. Everyone is every accepting and welcoming to students of all races, genders, orientations, religions, and cultures. The school absolutely prohibits acts of discrimination and neither is it tolerated by the student body. We also have very active extra-curricular groups for everyone on campus.

Getting There

The population on campus is predominately white and Christian, but, from what I understand, we are fairly diverse when it comes to our economic background, and political beliefs. As a community, there has been a conscious effort to become more diverse and accepting.

Facts

Gay Pride

There is a small gay community on campus, and there are a couple of student groups to support them—Allegheny Gay Pride (AGP) and Pride Alliance. Allegheny also has a special-interest house that functions as a "Safe Zone." The College is very accepting of its gay population, although it seems like there are always a few students who are intolerant bigots (it's certainly not the majority, though).

Political Activity

A majority of the student population would probably be classified as liberal, although there is a strong conservative population, as well. While most students have strong political views, only a small group is really outspoken. In general, it seems like campus is politically minded, but not necessarily politically active.

Economic Status

Students come from a wide variety of economic backgrounds (although the College does seem to be predominantly upper-middle class).

Most Common Religions

Most students are Christian, although many religions are practiced on campus. There are also several religious groups and special-interest houses, like the Hillel House, the Faith and Justice House, and the Lighthouse.

Minority Clubs on Campus

There are several minority groups on campus for African Americans (ABC), Asians (A5), and Latinos (Unión Latina). There are also groups on campus that support diversity in general (like the International House).
