Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The Vukovich Center for Communication Arts boasts a brand-new stage, plenty of space for set design and costuming, a state-of-the-art TV studio, and video editing labs for budding filmmakers. Like the Vukovich Center, both the Campus Center and the Wise Center are quite new. Serving as the hub of campus, the Campus Center holds the school post office, bookstore, McKinley’s, student organization offices, and game room. The Wise Center is the place to work out on campus, with basketball courts, volleyball courts, racquetball courts, a swimming pool, a weight room, and a second-story track that overlooks the basketball courts below. Yet, in contrast to these new buildings, on the other side of campus Bentley Hall stands tall with its traditional Federalist architecture, dazzingly maintained since the early 1800s. This dichotomy of new and old defines the campus facilities. Allegheny keeps its old buildings intact to showcase how long the College has really been around (though not every building is as well-kept as Bentley).

One thing Allegheny loves is a glass wall to let the sunlight in. Some of the academic buildings have new, warm spaces with plenty of natural light in which students can study. Other buildings are a bit outdated, but the school always has plans in the works to make renovations for both aesthetic and sustainability purposes. The administration is always hungry for a reputation as "the greenest college in America." Their efforts to make each building more environmentally friendly often conflict with the architecture from more than a century ago, when people did not consider LEED certification when constructing a facility.
