College Prowler Take

When you first arrive at Allegheny, you’ll probably hear people tell you not to join a fraternity or sorority. Although most non-Greeks are kind of apathetic about Greek life, some are vehemently against it and will say that you don’t need to buy your friends and how Greek life is expensive and lame. However, you’ll also meet the Greeks who will tell you that they used to think that, too, and then they changed their minds. Over a quarter of campus is Greek, so not many people can really be against them. Overall, they’re actually pretty popular.

Greek life plays an interesting role on Allegheny’s campus. Each Greek organization has the reputation of having a certain type of member. For example, the Phi Psi guys are known for being partiers and not so scholarly. The Delts, on the other hand, are more of the book-wormy type. Pretty much every Greek organization has a reputation like that, but they are very active on campus, one way or the other. Greeks are responsible for a lot of charity and social events open to everyone on campus, not just other Greeks. Some of the fraternities have houses, like the Phi Psi, Theta Chi, and Sigma Alpha Epsilon guys. The Phi Delts are new, and the Delts are still trying to get their house back after it was taken from them by the school for being too rowdy. No sororities at Allegheny have houses, but there is still a unity among sisters that lasts well beyond graduation.

Greek life doesn’t dominate. It’s there, but there are plenty of people who aren’t Greek.

I would say no, Greek life does not dominate the social scene, because I didn’t do it and some of my friends did, and I don’t even realize they’re Greek. There are plenty of Greek events, but there are still plenty of non-Greek events.

I think Greek life dominates the social scene at times. Especially at Wingfest. But once you find your own group, you can just ignore it.

It does not dominate the social scene, except when fraternities or sororities have events in the Campus Center and make a lot of noise, like running through Brooks Hall screaming chants.

Many people are involved in Greek life. Some fraternities and sororities are more exclusive than others. Generally, everyone hangs out with everyone else on campus, Greek or not. But, if you’re not going Greek, you’re not shut out of the social scene.
