College Prowler Take

The big buzz on campus, as far as housing is concerned, is the three-year residency requirement. With that in mind, only seniors are able to live off campus. Housing is everywhere in Meadville. It’s impossible to walk down a street without seeing house after house turned into apartments. Off-campus housing also tends to be cheaper and more flexible than campus housing. There are some incredibly cheap places around campus, but, of course, they are not as nice as the more expensive places. You get what you pay for. Most students prefer the extra freedom and move off campus as soon as possible.

If you ask the school, it will tell you that this is the reason for the residency requirement. Students move off campus as soon as they are able to. Many of them pick cheap apartments to save money and end up living in complete shambles. Some of the landlords in town take advantage of students, and don’t fulfill their part of the lease. The college is, in a way, trying to protect the students by keeping them on campus. They are trying to make college housing more appealing by making plans to build a whole new series of dorms—some that will be modeled after ski lodges. If you ask the students about the residency requirement, they will tell you that the school just wants its money. Either way, off-campus housing is only an option for seniors, and they have an incredible array of places to choose from.

If your dream is to live off campus, don’t come to Allegheny. The ability to live off campus is precarious right now since they are thinking of making a four-year residency policy. But, I like living off campus here. Financially, it’s worth it, but a lot of apartments are hovels. So, you have to be careful and choose an apartment and a landlord wisely.

Is living off campus worth it? It’s cheaper, and nothing is too far away. I can’t wait to move into my apartment next year.

Do the dorm thing, then rent an apartment your senior year. It’s too expensive to get college housing.

Pretty soon you might not be able to live off campus. The college is pushing stricter limits of having to live on campus, and the concept can be argued either way. There are a fair amount of apartments near campus to rent, but you’ll have a tough time if you want to live in style, which is generally not a high priority for college students.
