Quick Stats

Best Ways to Get Around Town
  • Bike
  • Drive or bum a ride
  • Walk
Best Ways to Get to the Airport The College, specifically Residence Life, will make arrangements to drive people to the airport.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Public transportation is virtually nonexistent at Allegheny and in Meadville in general. There are two kinds of transportation available: the town buses and the Loop. Some students do take the Loop downtown and back or as a ride home from the bars, but most people normally don’t. Taxi services aren't used in Meadville, although they do exist; however, it's too expensive for students to pay a taxi fare from Meadville to Erie or Pittsburgh. Attempts have been made to bring Zipcars or a bike-swapping program to campus, but these attempts fell flat (and all the bikes were stolen). Overall, the shuttle service into town or to airports isn't very convenient, as it forces students to schedule their time around when the shuttle leaves.

For the students without a car, it can be a real pain to find someone to take you to Wal-Mart when you need to go. In the winter, sometimes it can be too cold to walk downtown, and you’d really appreciate a ride, but no one is around to help you out. Most of the time, nobody notices the lack of public transportation, but there are times when it would really come in handy. For students needing to fly home on holidays, it's a nuisance to find someone to provide a ride to the airport.

Your Good Here, but If You Want to Leave...

On campus there is no need for transportation, which is nice. If you want anything from town it is an easy enough walk, and buses run fairly regularly. If you want to go any farther than that things get a bit more difficult. Not impossible, but not easy.

Allegheny Transportation

The Allegheny College campus is small and all things are within walking distance. The residence hall furthest away from Campus Center (Ravine)is only far relatively speaking. The actual walk from Ravine to Campus Center feels like 7 minutes. The walk from Ravine to the building furthest from it on the opposite end of campus is less than a 15 minute walk.

A car is not necessary, but an asset if you'd like to get out of Meadville every now and then. Luckily, many students have cars and will willingly take you where you need to go if you ask.

More Needed

There are options for students with out a car to get into town but it consists of only two different bus routes. It is much easier to have a car or get to know someone with a car.
