Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Athletics could honestly be better. There is very little of a following for the teams, and the majority of students who try out make it because there is such a small pool of students to choose from. The athletics program is becoming bigger, but it is quite slow. On the plus side, students, faculty, and staff can get into games for free, so there is no excuse for not checking out some games. The intramural sports have failed miserably. Everyone is so busy at Alverno with their outside lives and jobs that no one has time to play sports for fun. The College even tried having a monthly dodgeball night, and only two people showed up.

Even though Alverno sports are slowly growing, they still have a long way to go. But, honestly, Alverno’s mission is not to have the best basketball players in Milwaukee; its mission is to give women the chance to have a higher education. An active athletics department is going to take a long time to develop, but with the continually increasing student population, there will naturally be more and more students who are interested in playing sports.

Fan Support

At Alverno College the fan support of our athletics is very vibrant. Not only do the students support the athletics but so does the faculty and staff. At many of the games and athletic events students and staff cheer on the athletes. I enjoy the athletics events because of the fan support.

Not Enough Involvement

I feel the athletic department is alright at Alverno, but because it's an all girl's school I feel like they don't give the athletes enough credit. I also feel like there isn't enough advertisement about different games and meets so I never know when the games are.

Most Popular Sports

The basketball team often draws a decent crowd. This may be because they play during the winter, when more students are likely to watch them, unlike during the spring or early fall when students would rather be having fun in the sun instead of watching softball or soccer.

Most Overlooked Teams

The track team has some serious athletes who train just as hard as the soccer or basketball players, but do not receive the same recognition from fellow students. However, almost all of the teams do not get the attention they deserve.

School Spirit

The sense of community felt on campus is not exactly school spirit. There is definitely a feeling that the students are all there together, but it's not school spirit in the traditional sense of wearing school colors and painting faces at athletic events. But Alverno is the thread that weaves all alumnae together.

Getting Tickets

Students get in free to any sporting event at Alverno.

Best Place to Take a Walk

The best place to take a walk is down Oklahoma Avenue toward Lake Michigan. This, however, is not on school grounds. Alverno’s campus is in the middle of a residential area, and therefore, the campus itself is quite small, and there aren’t any vast trails or wooded areas for walks.
