Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Obviously, Alverno is not gender diverse, but there are students from every socioeconomic status, religious background, and section of the world. Over the years, Alverno has hosted students from Jamaica, Mexico, Korea, and Ireland. Even though Alverno is a Catholic college, there are 19 other religions present and represented on campus. The majority of programs are not strictly Catholic, and Campus Ministry provides services in which all students can relate.

Students at Alverno are also from various age groups and a large percentage are commuters, of which many are nontraditional, meaning that they did not come directly from high school to college. Many of these students have families and partners, and offer different perspectives from that of an 18-year-old. Students who are part of the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) community at Alverno are visible on campus through the programs and events they plan.

Alverno is a very diverse place, they actually strive in a way to have a lot of diversity in the school. they link up with other countries, and have a lot of exchange students come visit Alverno, and vise-versa. this school is very diverse and as soon as you step in a classroom you see that right away.

Transfer Students

There are many transfer students on campus at Alverno College. These students stay in the dorms and interact well with the other students. On the transfer students arrival day they are welcomed and their names are on display on a bulletin board. We welcome the transfer students and treat them like we would anyone else.

Diversity on Campus

I love my school because there are so many different kinds of people. We have a lot of people studying at my school who come from other areas in the world and these do not include those who are studying abroad at Alverno. Everyone feels welcome because no one stands out as being different from everyone else; this is because everyone is different from their peers. I love it.

Facts

Gay Pride

Alverno's chapter of the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) isn't always active, depending on the leadership in place. Its annual program, "Day of Silence," brings quite a large amount of attention, though.

Political Activity

There is little in terms of political activities or events on campus. Two groups that are becoming more visible on campus are the Student Government Task Force and Student Political Engagement Group.

Economic Status

Since Alverno is a private college, there is a solid percentage of students whose parents pay for their education because they can afford it. However, Alverno does offer a lot of grants and financial aid options. Students come from all different backgrounds, including many who are the first to go to college in their family. Alverno is also the cheapest private school in Wisconsin, so when compared to other private schools in the area, it seems more reasonable. There are also various massive scholarships, such as the Alverno Scholars of Wisconsin, which can be the difference between students going to Alverno or not.

Most Common Religions

The most dominant religious affiliation on campus is Catholic. But there are 19 other religious denominations on campus. Campus Ministry tries to be as inclusive as possible and has plenty of nondenominational events. Everyone’s religion, or lack of religion, is respected at Alverno.

Minority Clubs on Campus

There are events put on by various minority clubs throughout the school year. Some of these clubs are the Hispanic Women of Alverno, the Muslim Student Association, United Native American Voices of Alverno, and Women of Asian Ethnicity. The group Caravan focuses on bringing all cultures together for festivities through one program instead of small programs. Caravan has been quite successful through the past few years.
