Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Alverno has a different grading scale and way of teaching. There isn't a traditional grading system.
  • The grading system is awesome, but it’s harder than what you'd expect.
  • This is an all-girls school!
Tips to Succeed
  • Do your reading and other homework.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Teachers are so cool about setting up times to meet with students to go over materials or concepts. Tutors are also really helpful and accessible to all students.
  • If you can’t get your homework completely done, always come to class with something. Something is better than nothing, and something is also better than excuses. Teachers will be more understanding.
  • If you live in the dorms, don’t let all the drama get you down.
  • Remember, taking breaks from school is important.
  • Take advantage of the time management classes and tutors offered at Alverno. If you are struggling with something, there are all kinds of people and services there to help—so use them.
  • Talk to your professors and don't be afraid to tell them what is going on in your life if your assessment was really bad or you haven’t made it to class in a couple days.

Alverno

I absolutely love this school. What sets us apart is that we are all females, we dont follow a regular grade scale. They grade us on specific abilities that are necessary to have in the real world. I would recommend this school to any woman who would like to be empowered, and educated well. It's truly an amazing education and a good experience.

Welcoming

You feel like you belong at Alverno. The students and staff are very friendly and they treat you with respect and dignity...as a person should; you're even on a first-name basis with the faculty. There are no grades, it's a level system with validations and such. Small class sizes and a lot of activities on campus as well. I love it, it's a great school.

All Girls School

We are an all girl's school so sometimes girls get excited if they see a man because sometimes we don't see a male are age for awhile.

Traditions
  • Convocation: At the beginning of each semester, all incoming students are brought together to listen to a speaker who welcomes them to Alverno. One of the graduating students from that semester speaks, as well. It feels kind of like a graduation ceremony for incoming students. There is a reception held afterward.
  • Rotunda Ball: This is an annual December dance that is put on by the PAGE Board. There is usually a chocolate fountain, as well as other yummy treats. It is essentially a glorified prom.
  • Wing Wars: Each fall semester is Homecoming week. The biggest event during this week is the Wing Wars. Students are given a theme from Student Services and decorate their hallways according to that theme. At the end of the week, students are judged by various alumnae, faculty, and staff. The wing with the most creative interpretation is given a prize party.
Urban Legends
  • Some say that once you go to Alverno, you become a lesbian, which is false.
  • There's a rumor that Alverno isn’t a real college because it doesn’t have a traditional grading scale.
