Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Though the sports teams are Division I, and there are several intramural teams, sports do not receive the attention and notoriety that they would at some other schools. Many of the bigger sports fans on campus complain about the absence of a football team. AU is not a school where athletes receive celebrity-like attention or preferential treatment. While a football team is often the focal point of college life, there are many other ways to get involved at AU.

Some students are trying to get their peers more excited—a club known as the Blue Crew goes "all out" at the games, painting their faces and coming up with their own cheers. Basketball and volleyball are popular sports, and in the rare instance where a game is being televised, the turnout is better than usual.

Our athletics are reasonably good, but not phenomenal. Our girls volleyball team is really good, and our basketball teams our fairly good as well. We do not have a football team, but we have shirts for our team that say "still undefeated" which is quite comical. We also have club teams like swimming, lacrosse, and volleyball. Overall our teams are decent but the best part is that there are opportunities for individuals to play even if they aren't "good enough" to play on the school's official team.

American University Athletics

As a private, liberal-arts university, American is not as heavily focused on athletic performance as other colleges and universities around the nation are and, hence, doesn't have a football team. This fact was saddening at first because I loved high school football, but once you start your studies you quickly discover where the extra money is going: education (the real reason you're here in the first place).

The most popular sport at American is the women's volleyball team which is a Division One team and regularly clinches the Patriot League. Home volleyball games are definitely fun and fan support is very strong, especially during Bender Blue-Outs.

The athletic facilities on campus are excellent for such a small university. The team facilities are large and accommodating and the regular/public facilities are just as good.

AU Football: Undefeated

Growing up in the football mania south made transitioning to a school without a team a little weird at first but I got over it a pretty quick. There is not as much wild school spirit like that at some fiercely completive state schools but after just one semester I realized that all that hype often blinds students into choosing a team instead of proper school. Not to say that we don't know how to get rowdy and have some fun, it's just that AU students like to get excited about different things. At the same time, we have pretty successful Basketball and Soccer teams if you ever get the urge to paint your face and scream a fight song.

The wrestling team is well funded, well recruited, and is coached by former Olympians.

Rock Creek Park, the Nebraska Avenue dog park

Did You Know? AU boasts that their football team is “still undefeated” thanks to not existing.
