College Prowler Take

AU isn’t exactly known for its school spirit. Though the sports teams are Division I, and there are ample intramural teams, many students are less enthused about going to games than going out into DC. Many of the bigger sports fans on campus complain about the absence of a football team—they claim that this contributes to the lack of school spirit on campus.

Some students are trying to get their peers more excited—a recently founded club, the Blue Crew, go all out at the games, painting their faces, and coming up with their own cheers. Basketball and volleyball are popular sports, and in the rare instance where a game is being televised, the turnout is better than usual.

I'm not really a part of any of them, which is why I chose AU and not a state school. However, for those into sports, the varsity basketball team is good, as is the girls' volleyball team. Mostly, people get more hyped up about guest political speakers.

American is D1, so sports are pretty cool. Students get really into basketball games. There is not a football team here.

Sports are not that big. You can go to all the free games you want, but don't expect many people on campus to be able to converse with you about who won.
