College Prowler Take

When examining diversity, it depends what one considers diverse. Religiously, AU students come from many different backgrounds. Economically, scholarships offered provide some variety, but most students are from middle- to upper-middle-class homes. Location-wise, they hail from all 50 states and over 100 foreign countries, and AU prides itself on the booming international student population.

However, a majority of students are white, and some say they expected to see more minority students on campus. Considering how culturally and racially diverse DC is, AU is not a great reflection of that. There are many gay students, which creates a comfortable and accepting atmosphere, as well as many from the northeastern United States.

It's not. It is probably among the most homogeneous campuses in the country, with the possible exceptions of George Washington and Georgetown. Everyone is white, rich, liberal, from the East coast, and they all like guys. Whatever, I still like it, and DC is diverse enough to compensate. You can also take classes through the consortium service, and there are some pretty diverse options through that including Howard, UDC, UMD, and Catholic.

I feel like there is a lot of cultural diversity, but at the same time there are a lot of rich white kids. There is definitely a large measure of sexual diversity with the big and welcoming GLBT community on campus. There is not a whole lot of religious diversity—not many Muslims, a vibrant but small Christian community, with mostly agnostic or Jewish. The Jewish kids definitely represent! Politically, it’s pretty standard—60 percent liberal, 30 percent conservative, and 10 percent libertarian/don't care. Ideologically, you will definitely run into some unique characters, which is not a bad thing.
