Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

AU's location in the affluent D.C. suburb of Tenleytown means that there's a lower risk for crime at AU. The campus police are visible and effective, providing students with a strong sense of comfort and security. There are blue-light phones available throughout campus in case of emergencies, and security responds quickly and effectively to incidents.

In fact, the AU campus police may appear stricter and more vigilant than other schools' police only because of the lack of serious incidents for them to attend to. For the most part, the most serious crimes reported on campus are alcohol violations in the dorms. In addition, being literally around the block from the Department of Homeland Security and the Japanese and Swedish embassies means the cops are not only looking out for students, but for the country, as well.

Feel Safe

I've never been scared to take a walk around campus late at night. It is a very safe campus, never hear of anything incidents happening, there are lights everywhere and campus police walking around, and they're really nice.

Safe, but Remain Cautious

An active campus police department allows you to feel safe while on campus, though you should always be cautious in surrounding areas, particularly Tenleytown where there is a large public high school. On campus, always lock your door to prevent thefts, particularly during rush weeks for fraternities.

Very Safe

I've always felt safe here at AU. There has been a few burglaries, but nothing bad and Public Safety is only a call away and have a very fast response time!
