Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The two most popular places for students to live off campus include the Berkshire Apartments (Berks) and the Avalon at Foxhall apartments.

The Berks actually have a partnership with AU, where a certain number of units are available to students directly through the AU Housing and Dining Program. While it is not required to rent a Berk apartment through AU, it is much more reasonable than renting it directly from the Berks. The Avalon is more expensive than the Berks, and fewer AU students live here compared to the Berks.

Better Than on Campus, Rent Is Still Too High Though

It's expensive to live in DC. It's even more expensive to live on campus at American University. I suggest moving off campus to save money, but look beyond the Avalon and the Berks- they are very expensive. The Berks is just another dorm, and it has maintenance issues. Off campus is pricey but still cheaper than on campus.

Apartments a Little Cheaper Than Dorms

The off campus housing down the street from AU are a little less expensive than living on campus but you lose that sense of community. And you have to pay your own bills and clean your own bathroom, and who wants to do that?
