Advice

  • When the academic year draws to a close, many seniors walk around with worried faces and whine to their friends about not having found a job yet. In truth, most people that come out of this place get into the line of work or into the grad school of their choosing. The Amherst College career center has tremendous resources. Write your résumé as soon as you get here and have it looked at and edited by career center peer career advisors. Then you can post it on Experience, which is a network employers use to find potential workers and interns. This way, employers will have constant exposure to your résumé. In addition, big companies, especially financial services firms, come to the campus and hold information sessions, as well as interview for internships and jobs. Consult the Career Center for dates, and attend the information sessions—you’ll come better prepared for the internship interviews. The Amherst College pre-business seminar offers a series of lectures and Q&A panels with business professionals from various fields, such as investment banking, brokering, consulting, marketing, and public relations. The ACPB was initiated by students, and draws its participants from all the schools in the area. It is a week long, at the end of which there is a job fair where you can find out information about hiring in various well-known firms. Attending the ACPB will give you basic knowledge about the various professions in the modern world, and perhaps even give you a valuable connection that may prove helpful in years to come.
