College Prowler Take

Both great couples and sizzling one-night stands have been known to flourish at Amherst, so don’t worry about finding your college sweetheart or the danger of eternal abstinence. You stand a decent chance at finding either one at Amherst. Contrary to what might be expected from a preppy Northeastern college, there are quite a few hookups at parties and in general—if this is what you’re interested in. Guys have more options than girls do because Amherst is in close proximity to two all-women colleges, and those students do well in making their presence felt at Amherst parties. UMass students are also visible on weekends, but they are, in truth, considered less of a catch.

Lookswise, there are people from many different backgrounds here, so you’re going to observe some very different styles and looks. People simply like to tease on this issue, which is why you’ll hear so many complaints about the apparent lack of Cindy Crawfords and Brad Pitts. There are not too many supermodels here of either sex, but if your standards are just a dash lower, you can find a lot of decidedly good-looking men and women. Sex, you ask? Well, in a word, yes. People hook up and have sexual intercourse here and there at Amherst. If you object to commitment, however, you’re probably out of luck around here, but try UMass, as things are rumored to be more open-minded there in this respect. Nonetheless, if you are searching for some interactions with the opposite sex, there are a wide array of options here at the ‘herst.

Everyone's really nice, and usually pretty athletic, but not too jocky. Everyone cares about academics, but I would describe very few as actually nerdy. Attractive girls are few and far between.

The girl's are alright. We complain about them a lot, but they're honestly not as bad as you would think at a smart school. The typical student is friendly, outgoing, well rounded, and intelligent.

Everyone is a nerd on some level or else they wouldn't be at Amherst. Everyone has some things in common—one being that they're all smart. Within that, though, we have a substantial population of hipsters and other groups like that. But I've been surprised at how many people don't fit in to a group and are just individuals. Also, people always complain about the girls not being hot enough, and I agree.

There is a wide range of students at Amherst college. A typical stereotype would be geeky and unsociable, but that is definitely not the case. We have people from all over the world with many different backgrounds. It makes for a great social scene.

The average student is intelligent (Amherst is the No. 1 liberal arts school in the country, so the kids are pretty smart), athletic (60 percent of students play varsity sports, and those who don't are usually involved in club or intramural sports), and friendly. Girls are pretty average-looking, but it isn't a huge concern because UMass, Smith, and Mount Holyoke are all in close proximity. That being said, there's nothing better than a cute Amherst College girl.

Social Scene

People are generally open to new social contacts, and this is especially true at parties. Although students here hang out mostly with their close group of friends, most definitely dedicate time to meet new people. Some people, of course, are on the edges of the spectrum, being either hopelessly socially awkward at one extreme, or social butterflies on the other. You'll find very few unsocial nerds who care only about academics. Amherst students study a lot—but they definitely know how to have fun as well.

Hookups or Relationships?

Both are options at Amherst, but it depends on the individual. Amherst students are generally calculated about their relationships, and there may be times when they look strictly for hookups, and other times when they look for something serious. There are a great amount of couples that hookup continously or are on-and-off, but do not consider themselves to be in offical relationships. In some cases, students opt to stay off the market. Of course, people do leave room for spontaneity, should an exciting guy or girl come along.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

Parties at Amherst College are the best bet to meet someone, both because Amherst students tend to become very open and welcoming when partying, and because many students from other colleges come to make an appearance—many of them are on the lookout for a hookup. Alcohol may have something to do with people's friendliness, but only sometimes. There's a definite sense of desire to meet new people at parties. After a couple of years here, however, some Amherst students become a little tired of seeing other Amherst students at parties. If by that time these students are over 21, they go to the local bars, which are also a haven of young single women. Smith and Holyoke parties, due to the favorable ratios for heterosexual guys, have ignited many imaginations here, but usually going all the way over there proves not to be worth it, both because these girls don't exactly appreciate guys only wanting them for their bodies, and because many Smithies and Holyoke chicks come here on the weekends.

Dress Code

What dress code? People feel free to put on whatever they like. Most students, though, dress casually: jeans, T-shirt, jacket, that kind of thing. Flip-flops are very popular in the summer and spring times. Overly flashy clothes and extravagant color combinations are usually considered bad taste. Many of the student-athletes on campus can be seen wearing sweatpants or sweatshirts of their respective sports teams. There is also a respectable crowd who prefer formal dress, and they can be detected by the nicer brands of pants they wear, because no one wears a tie to the dining hall or to class. In parties, most people show up, again, dressed in whatever they like, except for parties that are designated as formal dress, in which case you may still come in flip-flops (I've done it, nobody will say anything to you) but know that most people will be buttoned up.
