College Prowler Take
Amherst students have to fend for themselves as far as partying and drinking are concerned. Having realized, somewhere in the 19th century probably, that the unstylish town of Amherst will not bring salvation to hedonistic and fun-loving hearts, students have taken it upon themselves to learn the much sought-after skill of party-throwing. Over the generations, alumni have passed it on to current students, seniors to freshmen, until we got to where we are today. Amherst nightlife is becoming quite fashionable. During weekends and some weekdays, parties happen all over the school, and all you have to do is get the weekly lowdown from friends and start hiking from dorm to dorm. So-Co (the Social Council) organizes theme parties, all of which seem to involve crazy dancing and no alcohol. Outside of the College, however, things are bleak. There are several bars in the town of Amherst, which some seniors and upperclassmen frequent. The bars offer a place to chill in peace. Dance clubs do exist in Northampton, but very few Amherst students ever go due to the distance, students’ laziness, and the fact that large parts of the Amherst student population hang out close to home. Students at Smith and Holyoke usually get bored pretty fast with their parties, and many of them come to Amherst College for a good time. Even UMassers, who live in the loudest and raunchiest place in the area, sometimes choose Amherst on weekends. In short, if you come to Amherst, you’ll be partying mostly close to home.

The parties on campus are pretty fun. There are dance parties and a lot of socializing with people you don't see day in and day out. The bars have nights for 21+ students. The best places are Monkey Bar and The Pub.

Parties can be hit or miss. A lot of the time people pre-game and end up traveling around until a suitable place is found. Alcohol is always free at parties though. Also, if you are interested, there are several other colleges in the area where you can go.

The parties are great, and the cops are real cool about everything. Off campus, Monkey Bar is the best bar.

Parties on campus are the most fun freshman year, and the fun decreases as you get older. Bars also get old, but if you don't always go on the same night, you'll meet students from other colleges there. The key to a great night: pre-game with your friends—pre-game hard.

People like to drink a lot when they’re partying, and it’s kind of interesting to see all these serious students talking funny and doing stupid things. It can get a little boring to constantly go to parties on campus. However, I think this is the most enjoyable thing to do on weekends. |
FactsClub Crawler
Nightclubs are virtually nonexistent in the town of Amherst, but if you’re willing to drive 25 minutes to Northampton, you’ll find a rather lively club scene. It’s best to have a car when you go clubbing, because the bus stops are far from where the clubs are. UMass, as well as Smith, Holyoke, and Hampshire students frequent those clubs much more than Amherst students do. Amherst kids usually like to stay close to home.
Organization Parties
The Social Council is a committee of students entrusted with Amherst College funds for the purpose of organizing awesome parties, and they usually succeed amazingly in that. The only drawback is that these are college-sponsored, and so no alcohol is served. Amherst students also keep their weekend interesting by organizing their own parties. Sports teams, a cappella groups, the debate team, and virtually all student clubs host parties. The student club hosting the party will usually supply the alcohol. Sorm residents often join to organize a party in their dorms. Theme house and social dorm residents (see the Campus Housing section) excel in this. These parties, too, have plenty of alcohol.
