Health & Safety:
Boone is usually a very safe town. There was a rape near (not on) campus recently. But the university sent out an e-mail letting everyone know what had happened. On campus there are these emergency blue light phones everywhere that will alert the police to your location with a push of a button.

It depends on where you go. Central is good, but it can get repetitive after a while. McAlister's in the student union is good, but not cheap. Trivette is just awful. Seriously only go there to use their waffle maker or for the free refills.

The AppalCarts are really great and go all over campus and town. However, they can sometimes be a little late and the schedules they run are weird. Overall, it's very convenient to have.

All the sports are great here! Students even get into all home sporting events for free! The atmosphere at football and basketball games is awesome but even baseball and soccer get lots of student support! Appalachian definitely has the best fans around!

There are traditional dorms and some nicer dorms in which each room has its own bathroom. The school has a laundry view system that can send you text messages when your clothes are done. That is super helpful. The housing process is simple and straight forward. All in all, living on campus isn't awful.

Sports are big at ASU. There is lots of school spirit. Our teams train hard and play hard. The athletics department gets very good funding and there are plent of sports to choose from if you want to get involved. In 2014, App State will be leaving the Southern Conference and going the Sun Belt. Everyone is excited for the change.

Although it is clear that diversity is prevalent at ASU, I wish that the International RLC was in a dorm that it more central to campus. It is in the LLC, which is the furthest distance from all of the other dorms. I think it would make a significant difference if the International RLC was held in a dorm closer to the bulk of students.

ASU's drug scene is existent just as much as any other school because of peer pressure. Even though there are drugs and alcohol on campus, I believe the police are mostly successful in enforcing legalities.
College Sophomore 2013-04-07T14:35:13Z
The police suck! Watch out while driving anywhere on campus, especially if you are an out of state student. The police will target out-of-state license plates far more often than N.C. plates.

There are excellent computer facilities in campus. However, the internet service in the residence halls is prone to outages. The campus bandwidth is lacking and tends to go out between the hours of 4pm and 10pm (i.e. prime studying time).

This is a relatively easy program to gain entry to. App State is a great regional university. I recommend it for in state students. However, as an out of state student this school can be a bit hard to acclimate to.
College Senior 2013-04-06T21:09:51Z
If you want to then you can, but it's not a big part of campus.
College Sophomore 2013-03-30T18:59:13Z
The shuttle system in Boone is really great. They drop off everywhere major and not major also. There are plenty of sidewalks and pickup stations. Sometimes the bus is a little late, and the State Farm Bus is crazy during holidays. Other than that it is a great system.

Parking on campus is okay, there's lots of parking options for upperclassmen but freshman can't keep there cars on campus. Seniors and grad students are the only people who can park in the Stadium parking lot and the cost for it is about $500. Sophomores through Seniors can also park pretty much anywhere else on campus and the cost ranges about $200. The restrictions for parking are that you can park anywhere on campus from 5:00 pm until 8:00 am the next day and if you don't move you'll get a parking ticket. On football game days only Yosef club members can park on campus so you have to take your car somewhere else before 8:00 am on Saturday morning, otherwise you'll get towed.

Health & Safety:
I've never felt unsafe on campus, there are usually always campus police on patrol throughout the day and the station stays open most of the night. There are police call stations all across campus, so they'll know where to find you. The campus also offers Safe Ride which starts operating in the evening and they will take you where you need to go if you feel unsafe about walking. If there is ever a crime around town the campus police sends everyone an email about the situation because the campus police and the town police work very closely together.

The dining halls serve pretty good food, it all just gets old after awhile. The dining hall on the west side of campus is a lot smaller than the central dining hall, the smaller one has theme nights every week, so it just depends on which night you go if they'll have something you want. There is a Mcallister's select though which is amazing and there's a larger one in the student union across campus. The central dining hall has a lot more variety though. Both the lower and upper level have about five to six different places to get food from. After your freshman year I would suggest moving to a lower meal plan.

There a lot of drugs around, but there is no peer pressure into trying them.
College Sophomore 2013-03-23T20:18:45Z
It is very easy to get around town with public transportation. The bus is free, Appalachian State has Safe Ride, which is also free.

This campus feel very safe and secure. Walking on campus at night all by myself does not bother me at all. Appalachian University has a very friendly environment.
College Sophomore 2013-03-23T20:08:53Z
The food is great, but the menus rarely change. It is very easy to get tired of the dining hall food.

AppalCart, the free local bus system, definitely makes it easy to get around Boone without a car. I've done so for the past two years with hardly any problems. They do get crowded if they arrive on campus right before a class begins, however. Safe Ride is also convenient for those who live on campus and need a ride for 1 or 2 people after 6 PM and before 2 AM. Unless you live far from campus or need to stay on campus very late, a car and the parking pass it requires is not a necessity at all. A lot of things are in biking distance as well.
College Junior 2013-03-20T02:06:26Z
During rush times at Appalachian State it can be difficult to find a computer in the library, even just for printing, but generally one is always available. you can also rent Macs and PC laptops from the library front desk. The wireless is a bit under the shaky side, and certain dorms barely connect. I have never used my personal printer, but I use my personal computer every day.

I am in the Elementary Ed program and I really enjoy it so far. Classes are not extremely hard, and the teachers are all friendly. There are a lot of opportunities to get in the schools and have first hand experience with schoolchildren. I feel very prepared to go out into the world and begin a career.
College Senior 2013-03-19T17:36:24Z
There are always fun things to do! Lots of parties, and it's super easy to find rides. Most bars are 21+, but there are tons of other off-campus parties to go to instead of the bar. There are a lot of bars close to campus that are always crowded with a good music scene on the weekends.
College Senior 2013-03-19T17:34:27Z
there are a lot of options on campus. most are somewhat expensive in comparison to what you can get off campus- there are a lot of close restaurants off campus to choose from as well. the main dining hall has basically any type of food you can imagine, and everything is very good and is well cooked. the service is always very friendly as well.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
