First off, I'm going to go ahead and say that there's more to diversity than race. And as far as that goes, App is awesome -- there's a really good and active GLBTQ center and club, and I've certainly never had any issues or felt any negativity at all because of being queer.
As far as race/ethnicity goes, there's a lot of white people here. However, there's tons of acceptance for those who aren't, and what racism I've seen has all been stupid and non-intentional (like everyone turning to look at the Jewish person when the Holocaust is mentioned, or assuming that the tall black guy is on the basketball team). And the Multicultural Center is great and has a lot of fun and interesting programs to help people become more aware of other cultures, which is awesome.

There are a few different dining areas available, but the food choices are still very repetitive and just not that interesting. Plus, it can be hard to find an option that isn't either gross or fried. There are vegetarian options, which is nice, but they kind of suck, and often still don't seem very healthy -- someone needs to introduce these people to some good tofu recipes, or maybe Indian cuisine. The "ethnic" selections are a joke. I've only actually seen Mexican and Asian, but they're not very good; the Mexican is okay, but the Asian is horrible. There's usually "stir fried" beef and chicken, both of which are dry and also super sweet. Yuck. It's also really hard to find anything that's not loaded with carbs. I have a medical thing that makes it hard for me to have too much bread, pasta, or rice, and while I know that my issue is not the standard, the sheer amount of carbs that are often the only thing that is available is not healthy for the general population either.

It's not that strict, really. It's more that if the police or faculty have to notice you, you'll regret it, but as long as you're not obnoxious about it, you'll be fine. They're not going to come knocking on your door searching for drugs or alcohol unless you're stupid and give them reason to.

I'm in the anthropology department, and it's fantastic. The professors mostly have PhD's, so they really know their stuff, but even though the're busy doing actual professional stuff, they teach their own classes (instead of pawning them off on TA's), and are friendly and approachable.

Appalcart is free and takes you anywhere inside Boone. The bus to the Charlotte airport is moderately priced, as well.

I gave an A not for it being extremely strict, but for it being the right amount of strict. The school doesn't really but into the students' personal lives unless they are risking their safety or that of others.

There isn't a lot of variation in the menu of each venue, but there are several different venues to choose from. Lots of kids eat chick fil a at the cafeteria, but there are also home cooked options, as well. The best part is the two markets you can shop at with your meal plan.

The parking at school is a nightmare. As a freshman, it's awful trying to get to your car. It costs a fair amount of money and when they are out, they are out. Other people sell parking passes but they can get pretty expensive. It is also terrible at football games. Appalachian State needs a lot more parking. Tickets are given out constantly.

Not a lot of shopping but a very friendly environment. If you like hiking, water falls, mountains, snowboarding, snow in general and snow sports, Appalachian State is a great school for you.

There are many house parties and the transportation is good. There is a website called collegebeeper which is a program that lets students drive sober and make money driving other students around. The bar scene is not great for under 18 but for over 21 it is pretty good.

The local weather can be very unpredictable and it snows quite frequently in the winter. Classes are rarely cancelled due to snow and sometimes it is hard to get across campus with the winds so strong so make sure to bundle up. If one is an avid snow sportsperson then they will love Appalachian State.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
