There are many restaurants off campus that supply student discounts as long as we show our student ID card. The costs range from very cheap to very expensive, so it's flexible. There are a wide variety of off campus dining opportunities with amazing ethnic variation among them. My favorite restaurant to go to is Paulucci's, an Italian restaurant in downtown Boone.

It snows a lot here, but classes rarely get canceled. It also rains a lot.

Greek Life is only about 10% of our school. If you want to get involved, you can, but you don't have to!

There are many majors to choose from at Appalachian State, I didn't have any trouble getting accepted to my major. Once I declared my major I was assigned a different advisor, that from the major's department. I am glad it was an easy transition from undecided to my choice major.

At Appalachian State University, there are only two main dining halls and I am glad both of them are trying to serve local, vegetarian, and vegan food. Despite their efforts, I feel like there are not that many choices of food. It gets really old going in the dining hall so I buy fruits for my room because I feel it is cheaper that way. On campus students require a meal plan, and the only frustrating thing about that is making sure you use all of it in a timely manner. If you finish it early in the semester, you will need to add more money to the account or pay with your personal cards or cash. If you don't finish the money in time, it gets carried over to the spring semester but doesn't roll over to the next one. You can't ask for a refund either, but I am not sure where the extra money goes that were left from spring semesters.

I was one of the chosen that required to send additional information using the government's website to send forms. It was really frustrating because it wouldn't allow me to send it earlier. I tried most of the summer and it finally allowed me to do so early August. It was frustrating and I wish there could have been an easier way since we had hard copies at home. It was also very stressful to know how much financial aid I would get before bills were due and we had to scramble to gather money for what financial aid didn't cover. Overall, I am glad that I received financial aid and hope it's not as frustrating the next time.

From the very beginning I have felt that this was going to be a very white school, and most of the people who are here are white. It is not a bad thing that the majority is white, but I come from a very diverse high school and miss seeing more people of different color. The students of Appalachian State are very nice, so that makes me feel better about it.

Some of the buildings are newer than others, so they are more sought after for amenities and cleanliness. But the older ones are closer to the center of campus and much more accessible. They also are offered at a much lower price than the new dorms.

The football team is very popular among students, faculty, and the community. Games are a big deal. The intramural system is also very popular among students.

Health & Safety:
As a transgender student, safety is always a serious concern. Appalachian employees do their best to uphold the campus nondiscrimination policy, and there is a legal clinic in place to help if any incidents do occur. As far as general safety goes, the campus has a fairly low crime rate but certain parking areas are not well lit so theft from cars has been reported. The number of campus alerts for assaults also seems to have increased in the past year.

I am currently going through recruitment as a sophomore to be in a sorority at App. I didn't participate in it as a freshman because of the social stigma I thought it would have coming into the school. I couldn't have been more wrong. Greek life at App is not what it is portrayed as through mainstream media. They have a very tight knit relationship with everyone who is (and is not) greek. All the fraternities and sororities go to each other's philanthropy events and support each other in everything they do.

Boone is a beautiful town and while it may be small it is packed with both outdoor and indoor opportunities to get involved. Some of the most popular outdoor activities consist of snowboarding, skiing, hiking, and kayaking. There are also clubs and bars open to 18+ residents. A major plus of being an App student is the student discount you receive at various in-town companies, but sometimes a drawback is the 21+ age requirement at certain bars.

Wide Variety of Choices – I came to Appalachian State University originally because of how beautiful it is up there and I had heard many good things from alumni. I have found that mostly all the professors have much time outside of class and if not are easily contacted by email. They really enjoy seeing their students succeed and want to help any way they can.

Freshman have to walk over a mile to the parking spot, and if you leave your car on campus for more than a few minutes you will get a ticket.

Living on campus connects you to everything that is happening on campus. We have 19 dorms on campus and they are on west or east side of campus. Most of the west side dorms don't have air conditioning and are not renovated. All of east side dorms except for East Hall are renovated and have AC.

Appalachian State's campus life is truly like a family. No matter how many people you know, you always feel like part of the App family because we support one another and love App. On campus, two of the residence halls has been LEED certified and we have solar panels on top of buildings and really encourage recycling. The student center offers the bookstore, market, coffee shop, restaurants, gym, movie theater, etc. Also, there is the Solarium, which is our tropical outdoor room that is inside. There are many student hangouts, Sanford Mall, Plemmons Student Union, coffee shop, Durham Park, Duck Pond Field, and lobbies in residence halls.

We have three workout gyms on campus. The academic programs are filled with professors that truly care about their students and excited about what they are teaching. The professors are more than willing to help out their students in anyway. Also, we have a tutoring service that is open to everyone and free of charge. As for the social scene, we have a movie theater and concert hall on campus, concert hall just off campus, 2 restaurants that turn into night clubs at night, and football games are always packed. Campus life is fun and offers lots of programs. We have everything from intramural to varsity sports, free/low cost concerts, Homecoming Blood Drive that collects the most blood in all of NC, clubs for everything from ethnicity and religion to academics. There are more than enough opportunities for everyone here at Appalachian.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
