College Prowler Take

ASU students definitely agree that football is the primary sport that’s followed and talked about here. While ASU football didn’t do so great this past season, their followers are still faithful and full of spirit. The students who are into the other sports here usually either play a sport or know someone on a team. Baseball and basketball can be pretty popular among students as well. Being a Division I school, ASU sports are admirable. While intramural and club sports are not as popular as the varsity sports, there is still an impressive number of students who participate in them. There are so many opportunities for athletes who do not have the time or ability to participate in varsity sports. There are classic popular sports like soccer, lacrosse, and volleyball as well as specialty sports like martial arts and different forms of dance. The Hip-Hop Coalition is widely known at ASU and provides and upbeat, fast, and fun atmosphere for both males and females that are into dancing. Of the many students at ASU, and the great number of hot bodies here, it’s obvious that a good number of them find something at this school to keep them in shape.

ASU pride and support are highly visible, as demonstrated by the often intimidating student turnout for football and basketball events in particular. The biggest, and most heated, game of the year is that between ASU and U of A (University of Arizona) football, played late in the season. Even when the teams meet in Tucson, home of the Wildcats, many students make the trip to show their support. The Sun Devil/Wildcat rivalry is the most storied in the state and among the most infamous in the region. If you love sports, there is surely a team at ASU that will fit your interest.

Our school is huge, so people probably don’t think of it as a commuter’s school, but many of the students are from Arizona and live at home, and a lot of upperclassmen live off-campus. We don’t exactly have the greatest network of alumni. Intramural sports are really big with fraternity boys.

ASU’s a PAC 10 campus, so sports are huge. Intramurals are great and accessible. We have one of the nicest student sports facilities in the country, and there are intramural teams for every sport.

Varsity sports are big, but tough to get into. I’ve heard that intramurals are great.

Sports are big at ASU. Football games are nationally televised. They’re a lot of fun. I’m on the dance team at ASU and I perform at all the games. We’ve got a huge stadium. It’s beautiful.

When I think of ASU sports, I think of football and Sparky. Sparky does pushups every time ASU scores. They got a new mascot though and he sucks at doing pushups. I think it’s a girl or something.

Getting Tickets

Season tickets are a must. As of Fall 2009, a dual football/basketball student season ticket package was offered for an unbelievably low price of $99. For non-season ticket holders, buy tickets in advance! For season ticket prices, call (480) 727-0000. For single game tickets, call (480) 965-2381. Or log on to www.thesundevils.com. The sporting events are worth buying tickets for---they’re so much fun!

Most Popular Sports

Varsity Football and Men’s Basketball are huge! End of story. Every ASU student should experience at least one game, no question. Both sports attract a huge crowd with a great display of school spirit, maroon and gold style. Intramural sports are very popular, as well, with clubs, fraternities, sororities and other groups competing.

Most Overlooked Teams

It seems as though all teams, other than football and basketball, are overlooked. You don’t hear much talk amongst students of any team, unless they broke a record, made it to finals, etc.

Best Place to Take a Walk

There’s an outdoor dirt track that goes around the large field outside the SRC; that’s a good place to walk or run for exercise because it’s rarely crowded. Palm walk is a beautiful strip that cuts down the middle of campus, if you’re just looking to take a nice walk and admire the campus. If you have people visiting, take a walk down Mill Avenue; it has a cozy downtown feel that is perfect for a pleasant stroll.
