College Prowler Take
With the immense number of freshmen who enroll every year, it’s necessary to sign up and request housing early for the best results. There are many options for living situations the first year, depending on the type of hall you want to live in. While many people rumor that you should avoid Manzanita Hall, it can be a great experience because it is the largest and has the most activity. If your social life is of any importance, try to avoid Best, Hayden, and Irish (Honors dorms). If you’re more concerned with the actual condition of a dorm, then Sonora may be the place for you. It’s further from the Main campus but it is the newest. There are many dorms to choose from, and one may fit your personality better due to its size or what activities it offers. ASU’s Freshman Year Experience (FYE) program is a terrific way for incoming freshman to ease themselves into life away from home and the college experience among peers ASU prefers to call dorms “residence halls.” The reason for this is that the word dorm indicates a place solely for students to sleep. At ASU, a residential life experience involves much more. They are living-learning communities that are designed to promote academic success, and encourage involvement and interaction with other students with a myriad of activities and academic help, such as tutoring and academic advising. Rather than simply a place to sleep, most students will agree that your dorm is where you spend much of your time, and accordingly the people you live with are the people you spend the most time with. The halls are well furnished for the most part, and the apartment-style residences offer an even more plush lifestyle. The dorms are fairly safe because there is 24-hour security on duty for each one as well as 24-hour desk service. Students choosing to live in the residence halls their first year will thank themselves for it.

Avoid Manzy. It is strictly a freshman dorm, and is not in very good condition. I’ve heard stories of people puking and urinating in the halls. Sonora is a newer facility, and San Pablo and Hayden are also fairly new and in good shape. |

The dorms are great at ASU, but it’s all about what you make of them. I lived in PV West and absolutely loved it. It was in a great location, and even though it was a crappy building, it really didn’t matter because it just added to the experience. Manzanita Hall is sort of known as being the one to avoid, and everyone seems to like Sonora even though it’s way too far off of campus. It’s definitely the nicest, though. |

The freshman dorms are fun because everyone hangs out together. Try to live in Manzanita. It’s called the STD Center, but I’ve met a lot of people there just by visiting friends. Sonora is cool, too. |

The nicest dorms are San Pablo and New Hayden. Some dorms have one bathroom for guys and one for girls on every floor. Community style bathrooms are cleaned daily by a maid. Other dorms feature suite-style bathrooms (one bathroom shared between two rooms), which, though private, you’ll have to clean yourself. |

I didn’t live in a dorm because I turned in my application for housing too late, but my sister lived in a dorm last year. Generally, students share a room with one roommate and are joined by a bathroom to two others. I’ll be honest, the dorms aren’t the nicest things I’ve ever seen, but my sister met so many people and loved it while she was there. I wish I had lived in the dorms. |
