Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

With the immense number of freshmen who enroll every year, it’s necessary to sign up and request housing early for the best results. There are many options for living situations the first year, depending on the type of hall you want to live in. While many people rumor that you should avoid Manzanita Hall, it can be a great experience because it is the largest and has the most activity. If your social life is of any importance, try to avoid Best, Hayden, and Irish (Honors dorms). If you’re more concerned with the actual condition of a dorm, then Sonora may be the place for you. It’s further from the Main campus but it is the newest. There are many dorms to choose from, and one may fit your personality better due to its size or what activities it offers.

ASU’s Freshman Year Experience (FYE) program is a terrific way for incoming freshman to ease themselves into life away from home and the college experience among peers ASU prefers to call dorms “residence halls.” The reason for this is that the word dorm indicates a place solely for students to sleep. At ASU, a residential life experience involves much more. They are living-learning communities that are designed to promote academic success, and encourage involvement and interaction with other students with a myriad of activities and academic help, such as tutoring and academic advising. Rather than simply a place to sleep, most students will agree that your dorm is where you spend much of your time, and accordingly the people you live with are the people you spend the most time with. The halls are well furnished for the most part, and the apartment-style residences offer an even more plush lifestyle. The dorms are fairly safe because there is 24-hour security on duty for each one as well as 24-hour desk service. Students choosing to live in the residence halls their first year will thank themselves for it.

Staff Has No Idea

The campus living is average. The facilities are nice but the staff has no idea what goes on inside. There is an abuse of alcohol and drugs. I for one had a roommate that was doing drugs in the dorms and I complained to the front desk several times. He had even been arrested in the dorms a couple times, and it took about two months and 3 arrests to get him removed. Way too lenient.

Depends on the Dorms

PV and the other dorms in that area tend to be isolated from the rest of campus. Also from what I hear PVs dorms are not that great and it takes a lot to get vistors in. Hassayampa is fairly decent with vistors as long as you are with them (if they are on there own they can get stuck because they do not have access). The rooms are decent. I do not know that much about the dorms in the middle of campus. The Barrett dorms are nice and it is easy to have visitors. My floor became very close and most floors tend to be social to varying degrees.

It's Fun and Convenient.

All freshman are required to live on campus, which isn't a big deal since living in a dorm is much more convenient than being off-campus. The school is so large that you want to be as close as you can get to save travel time. There are very many freshman dorms to choose from with varying prices, which is good to see which best fits your budget. However, there are only two upperclassmen dorms, they aren't that nice, they're very pricey, and they fill up quickly. So basically, it's great if you're a freshman, and not so great if you get past the first year.
