College Prowler Take

ASU is a surprisingly diverse campus. Students from across the country and around the world come to Arizona to study. The diversity at Arizona State is fairly large, and is continuously growing. ASU’s home in the multi-cultural desert Southwest creates an atmosphere of special pride and cultural diversity. ASU actively recruits a diverse student body, staff, and faculty, and continuously develops programs to meet their needs and enrich the University as a whole. There are programs that cover the cultural, academic, environmental, and social spectrums. The newest academic programs are the Chicana and Chicano studies, which is the first program in the nation to require that each student gain competence in a second field. The African American program offers more than 30 classes. Gammage Auditorium brings a diversity of cultural events to ASU as well.

Students will agree that ASU is full of people from all over the United States and the world. Coming to ASU is a wonderful cultural experience where you will meet people and be able to come together and share the differences from your previous worlds. College is all about meeting people unlike you with different lives and different homes. The environment at ASU is very much conducive to that very ideology. Even when the statistic says there’s only a few percent of a certain race, it still means over a 1,000 people. When you actually come to the campus here and look around, and especially when you get involved, you realize how diverse the campus and the people are. It can be a refreshing experience.

I’d say the African American population is fairly small here, but there’s definitely diversity. Not only with race, but with where people are from. This school attracts people from all over the United States; you’ll meet people from so many different places that have been through a lot of different experiences.

The diversity at ASU has been steadily growing. We’re about twenty percent minority now with over 10,000 minority students; that statistic used to be a lot smaller. I think it’s wonderful.

I’d say that the majority of people here are white, but there are also a lot of people from all over. America is diverse already, so even the people that are from here have all kinds of mixed races. A big university like this brings people from all over the world.

I have friends that are from all over the place. I’m from the East Coast and I have friends from the south, the west, Mexico, Canada, Europe, and Asia. I’ve never met so many people from so many places. If you grow up in a small town and never get out, you never realize all the cool people, cultures, and traditions that are out there. ASU has totally opened up my eyes to diversity.

We have a lot of organizations here that add to the diversity. There’s an Asian Business fraternity, a Japanese Animation club, a Jewish fraternity, and other organizations like that. There’s a whole bunch of diversity here.

Facts

Economic Status

ASU is extremely economically diverse. Although, parallel to stereotypes, ASU students are said to all drive BMWs, wear Prada sunglasses, and carry Gucci bags, it also can be said that, in general, people tend to notice extremes over anything else. The generalizations shouldn’t frighten you. The great thing about ASU is that you can find all walks of life, even students who aren't rocking all of next season’s trends.

Gay Pride

The campus is very accepting of its gay population as well as its diversity in general. There are a bunch of on-campus groups like ACLU Gay and Lesbian rights, GLAAD, OutProud, and GSWA (the Gay Straight Whatever Alliance). The gay community is neither overly outspoken nor particularly quiet. Homosexual demonstrations, which are few and far between, outnumber reported instances of discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Minority Clubs

Asian/Asian Pacific American Students Coalition

Most Common Religions

There isn’t one predominate religion that can be fixed on ASU, but the most popular one is probably Christianity. There are actually a couple of churches on campus that are of Christian denominations. Because we’re in the Southwest, there is also a pretty big Mormon population out here. The religious groups at ASU are relatively quiet though, with a few isolated exceptions. One can rarely walk past Hayden Lawn without being bombarded by acoustic Christian rock, the gospel, or if you’re particularly unlucky, verbal assault, compliments of the occasional on-campus preacher.

Political Activity

When it comes to politics, ASU is right, left, and all over the place. With the recent election, things really heated up in Arizona. Since ASU is so diverse and home to students from all around the country, voters certainly did not swing one particular way. However, it’s reasonable to believe that ASU, regardless of majority, is 10 times more liberal than the state of Arizona itself, which notably, has the most strict marijuana laws and most lenient gun control laws.
