Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

As at many major universities, drugs are readily available and easily accessible. If you want them, you can get them. Marijuana is generally present at most off-campus parties and in the dorms. Harder drugs such as cocaine, mushrooms, ecstasy, and various painkillers are less visible but can be acquired with minimal effort. For those students who are into drugs, there are definitely connections being that the student population is so large. This is not to say that ASU is a campus fueled by drugs. Underage drinking and DUI arrests greatly overshadow illegal drug possession or consumption in Tempe. Many students have been known to over-party in terms of drinking because of the wild nightlife here. Still, students who are into hard drugs, or students that ruin their lives from drugs, at ASU are hard to find.

Unquestionably, the drug scene is not pressuring to students who do not choose to involve themselves in it. Typically, students don’t even come in contact with the drug scene at all. On the other hand, alcohol consumption is big here, and can greatly affect your education if you do not control it. The partying here can be awesome and is a great experience, but it must be kept within reason. “Work hard, play hard,” is a motto that should reverberate in every ASU student’s mind. The pressure to go out to bars and parties is a lot larger than the drug pressure. Still, most of the students here in the West are pretty laid-back and aren’t forceful to anyone in that area.

Dry Campus

There is a bad reputation for ASU regarding alcohol and drugs. I can find people to hang out with and not drink or I can choose to do that. It is not necessary.

It's College

It's decent, I don't see a lot of it, and what I see is legal drugs. People smoke a lot outside, and while you're not suppose to inside, they do. I remember there were several times where the fire alarms went off due to someone smoking in their room.

Peer Pressure

I had many friends in high school who were good students who never did drugs or drank alcohol. As soon as they got involved in college life, this changed. What I've noticed is that it really depends on the friends students associate themselves with. I haven't had this problem because I've associated myself with friends who have similar values.

Facts

Did You Know? In January of 2002, a 51-year-old professor in the Department of Plant Biology was arrested for manufacturing with intent to distribute large amounts of MDMA (ecstasy) out of an on-campus laboratory. The former professor was sentenced to 120 days in jail and five years probation for his role in an ecstasy ring that stretched from Idaho to California. Currently incarcerated, the professor has since resigned from his position at ASU. A billboard on the I-10 E near campus serves as an enduring reminder that "Meth Labs and Children Don't Mix."
