  • A-Mountain: There’s a big painted A on top of this mountain next to campus; students/frats/sororities/rivals climb up in the middle of the night and paint it different colors depending on the occasion, or for football games.
  • AWA: America West Arena
  • BOB: Bank One Ballpark, home to the Arizona Diamondbacks
  • Dos: Short for Dos Gringos, the greatest creation of a bar; a stumble away from campus.
  • Frat Row: Where all the fraternity houses are, where alcohol is constantly flowing.
  • Hassay: Short for Hassayampa Academic Village, the nicest and newest dorms.
  • Havasu: Lake Havasu City is on the boarder of Arizona and California on the Colorado River. It’s an awesome spring break and partying place.
  • Hayden Lawn: The grassy area above Hayden Library
  • Howie Bread: Cheesy-bread, late night (intoxication) food from Hungry Howie’s is the absolute best.
  • Manzy, a.k.a. the Beehive Party Dorm, a.k.a. the STD Center: Manzanita Hall
  • MU: Memorial Union; the main place students get food
  • The Nipple: The skylight from Hayden lawn into the Hayden library lobby. It looks like a nipple.
  • P.V. Beach: The grounds outside the three P.V. dorms facing University Drive
  • The Quads: The Quadrangles apartments community on University Avenue
  • SRC, a.k.a. the Rec: Student Recreation Complex
  • Sun Card: Your student ID. You will use this for everything so always make sure you have it on you. You need it if you have a meal plan and you want to eat, to print on campus, to buy or sell textbooks, to sign up for classes, when you take tests, etc.
  • Vista: Short for Vista Del Sol, the newest apartment complex, where most pre-games are held.
  • The Witching Hour: Last call (2 a.m.)
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Designer handbags are everywhere.
  • If you are not blonde, you are in the minority.
  • It is extremely easy to get sucked into ASU's social scene.
  • Live it up your freshman year.
  • Long-term relationships are scarce.
  • Set aside additional funds for spontaneous Mexico, California, and Las Vegas weekend trips.
  • The difference between "The Shocker" and "Sparky's Pitchfork" (often "thrown up" at sporting events).
  • The smaller your meal plan and the larger your cache of M&Gs and Sun Dollars the better.
Tips to Succeed
  • Befriend your professors.
  • Check Blackboard every day.
  • Get involved.
  • Go to class.
  • Meet people in your classes and in your major.
  • Plan your schedule carefully.
  • Remember, even if you don't go out every day your friends won't de-friend you.

Profits Soar as Educational Experience Sinks

The University processes a lot of students. It's main goal is to turn out students with degrees at as high a profit as possible. The university still offers a wide variety of interesting programs, but the quality of the education the university provides decreases in correlation with its rising greed and useless fees. The school has significantly departed from its original charter to provide an affordable education to Arizona residents.

Arizona State Has Potential

The Kinesiology program is among the top 10 in the country. However, campus is nothing special. I have been to out of state community colleges that are more technologically advanced. The faculty are very knowledgeable and wiling to teach those willing to learn. The cultural diversity allows the students to experience other worlds close to home.

Traditions
  • “A” Mountain: Painting the large “A” on A-mountain is a tradition among ASU students. It is painted for many different reasons and occasions. It occurs every fall when incoming freshmen paint the A and kick off welcome week. Sometimes it’s painted white to signify starting the year fresh, and a lot of times it’s gold to match our school colors. It was painted like the American flag after September 11. Fraternities and sororities have also been known to paint the A during rush week. Although we try not to let it happen, once in a while a rival will sneak up there and paint the A with their school colors before a football game that we play against them.
  • Football Games : ASU football at Sun Devil Stadium holds much tradition within itself. Students, faculty, and alumni dress in gold (and sometimes maroon), and sometimes even paint their faces with the ASU symbol. It’s quite a sight seeing an entire stadium dressed in gold. When our team scores a touchdown, Sparky, our mascot, is hoisted up on a platform by the male cheerleaders and does pushups to match the number of points we have. The crowd counts for him in unison. Students also throw tortillas and see if they can get them onto the field. Tailgate parties before games are common; sometimes they are right in a parking lot near the football stadium.
  • The Lantern Walk: The Lantern Walk is one of ASU’s oldest and most prominent traditions. It was started in 1917 as the symbolic passing of the torch from the senior class to the junior class. It has come to represent the coming together of students and alumni, the Sun Devils of today and those of the past. One night each fall, during Homecoming Week, students and alumni march “A” Mountain bearing candles to light the way. Once atop the butte, the school’s fight song is performed and participants light the “A” as a showing of school pride and to symbolize the historic tradition that continues at ASU.
  • The Victory Bell : The Victory Bell, located outside the southeast entrance to Sun Devil Stadium, rings after every football game victory.
