Arizona Western College has an open admission policy, but some prerequisites apply to certain classes. New students are to take placement tests in reading, sentence skills, and math at the testing center, which help place them in the appropriate class level. Upon student request, transcripts are evaluated, and students are notified of which courses are equivalent or can substitute. Courses numbered 99 and lower do not transfer, and only credits with grades of A, B, C, CR (credit), or P (passing) are accepted. The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) allows students to earn college credit by examination in diverse subjects including English, Math, French, and Spanish.

AWC has a lot of options in terms of class style, including traditional, web-based, hybrid (part face-to-face, part web-based), and ITN (Interactive Television Network) classes. Night classes are also available for those working during the daytime. Students can get credit from their work experience when the job or internship is related to their major or field of study. Students can also better their scores through extra-credit opportunities that some professors give for going to the Student Success Center to get free tutoring or for attending a conference or event that is related to the course. Full-time students take a minimum of 12 credits per semester; anyone taking fewer than 12 credits is considered a part-time student. A student taking 12 credits will spend around 18 hours in class weekly, a weekly investment of an hour and a half per credit. Registration can be done online or in person. Once a student is admitted, a student log-in account is assigned to allow him or her to easily register for classes online.
