Tips for Earning Credits
Never miss an extra-credit opportunity. Some professors give extra credit for going to the Student Success Center to get free tutoring or for attending a conference or event that is related to the course.
Academic/Testing Requirements
Regular admission requires students to be one of three things: a graduate of an accredited high school/have a high school certificate of equivalency, be at least 18 years old and demonstrate evidence of potential success, or be a transfer student in good standing from another college or university. Some prerequisites apply to certain classes. All four levels of ESL (English as a Second Language) classes are available at AWC, and new students are to take placement tests in reading, sentence skills, and math at the testing center, which will help place them in the appropriate class level.
Transferring Credits In & Out
Courses numbered 99 and lower do not transfer, and only credits with grades of A, B, C, CR (credit), or P (passing) are accepted.
Work & Life Experience Credits
The Career Development office helps students get credits from their work experience as long as the job is related to their field of study.
Typical Session Length
A session length depends on the type of course and the number of times the class meets weekly. A session usually lasts two hours and 15 minutes when meeting twice a week. Science class sessions last 25 minutes longer (two hours and 40 minutes). Classes meeting four times a week usually last 50 minutes per session.
Class Style & Structure
AWC provides a lot of options in terms of class styles, including traditional, web-based, hybrid (part face-to-face, part web-based), and ITN (Interactive Television Network) classes. Night classes are also available for those working during the daytime.
Course Registration Process
Registration may be done online or in person. Once a student is admitted, a student log-in account is assigned which allows him or her to easily register for classes online.
