Health & Safety:
Good Experiences – I've always seen the campus police out and about on patrol, and they've always been incredibly professional and polite. I feel safe knowing that they are doing they're job.

Students Are Always Out and About – hanging on the green is always a favorite hobby for students and professors
the campus center was just refurnished and between residence life, greek life, and campus activities board there is almost always something students can go to for free

Only If You Like the Frat of the Night – There are plenty of parties going on, but they may not be what you expect. Other than partying at someone's house, the only thing we have in town is Cellermans. Not much excitement, you know, unless it's Lambda Chi.

Fishing in a Small Pond – You'll find very intelligent people, but all succumb to the partying scene. Hope you don't mind being eskimo brothers/sisters with any of your friends because chances are you've kissed the same person. It's a small school...

There's Enough Restaurants for Most. Little Cultural Food. There's enough to live on for 4 years. But most drive the 40 mins to go to Dallas for better variety.

The Grade Says It All. We are not a NCAA Division 1 or 2 school. So athletics are so-so. We lose a lot. :(

The school provides a bus system that students can call up if needed. However, it runs at limited times and is known to strand students in Sherman. You're best bet is to have your own car or reliable friends with one.

Sherman Is a Very Small Town – Sherman is a very small town. The mall is not up to the standards of many students and the only social environment the city proposes besides a bar or two is a movie theater. Sherman offers limited options for students to participate in. It lacks potent landmarks, cultural events, extensive shopping, etc. However, for basic needs, the town is sufficient...only if one enters with low standards. Safety on campus is well taken care of but the same cannot be said for the town. Dallas is only an hour away though.

For the size of the school, the facilities at Austin College are more than acceptable. Library is sufficient; however, the hours could be longer. Cafeteria food is mediocre; athletic facilities are suitable for the size of the student population and well taken care of. There are many extra-curricular organizations, which I believe knit the student body together. Many diverse cultures, religions, activities, and views are represented and interact with the entire student body to keep everyone involved frequently. Considering the size of the town, student hang out spots do not generally exist off campus and the spots on campus are not always as actively used as they should be; however, depending on the level of students' involvement, there are always opportunities for student interaction ranging from education film presentations to social get togethers in the evening.

We have typical texas weather; unpredictable. It gets pretty hot in the summer and can be pretty cold in the winter, but it is nice having seasons!

Great If You're Involved but Not for Spectators – This is a very small division 3 school. It allows people to play sports who would not be able to do so at larger schools but the level of athletics is comparable to the average high school sport environment so it's not so much a spectator sport. IM sports are a pretty big thing too, the students get more pumped about these sometimes than the varsity ones.

Be Creative About It – Sherman does not hand you entertainment opportunities, you are more or less left to your own devices. With that said I am never bored. There is plenty of fun to be made here you may just have to find it in different places than a culturally rich city. But if you want that, Dallas is not too far!

Campus PD are pretty understanding and wont do anything too drastic but a lot of the illicit behavior here happens off campus where you are left up to the whims of the sherman cops.

Health & Safety:
Completely Safe – All of campus is well lit at night, there are emergency telephones located all throughout the campus grounds. Being as it's a small school campus police are never far, probably within shouting distance. During my four years there, I think the only crimes I heard of were unattended backpacks being stolen from the library twice.

Many People Do Join Greek Groups but You're Not Missing Too Much If You Don't – Greek life is very open on campus, and a sizable chunk of the student population participates in Greek life. Greek organizations provide nearly all the parties, and they're almost always open to everyone on campus. Each organization has its own stereotypes that have some basis of truth to them.

An Automobile Recommended, but Not Necessary – Sherman, being a small town, lacks a system of public transportation. To ameliorate this, Austin College has started its own shuttle service called the Roo Route. The Roo Route goes directly, or near to, most of the locations in the city you could want go, however it only stops by each location once an hour, so if you just miss it you'll be waiting for awhile. The campus sits in a residential area, and as such there are only a few non-residential places that are truly within walking distance of the college.
Automobiles are clearly the best option in this scenario. They are definitely not required though, most of the student body lives on campus so you'll be just a few minutes walk away, at most, from the majority of your friends, and campus is obviously where most of the student activity takes place. Additionally, because a large number of students own automobiles, you could get by just bumming rides off of your friends.

Guys & Girls:
Slim Pickings – I feel like the ratio of attractive guys to attractive girls is a little lopsided. The number of hot girls at AC is definitely low. Anytime I have friends from other schools visit, they always ask, "Hey, where are all the pretty girls at?" I have even been asked by a prospective student and his parents where all the attractive girls on campus where because that would be a factor in their college decision!
College Senior 2012-08-14T14:18:36Z
Not Much Going on – There isn't much to do in Sherman. It's small and pretty boring. There is limited restaurants, shopping, and attractions. This leaves many students with the option of either going back home or partying on weekends.
College Senior 2012-08-14T14:11:37Z
Good Choice – There is a great sense of community at Austin College. Everyone knows each other. However, social life must be kept limited due to the difficult school work.

Health & Safety:
Typically, things stay pretty safe. However, there have been instances of vandalism both on campus and in the parking lots. Also there has been cases of theft in dorms and around living facilities. The dorm rooms automatically lock, but students have found ways to break in to rooms.

It Could Be Better. Meal plans are too expensive for what you're paying for. The dining hall food isn't the best, and it gets old after a couple weeks into the semester. The Pouch Club is the only late night option which isn't fantastic either and unhealthy.

Great School, Great Professors – The AC student body is relatively small, which helps keep class sizes down. You get a lot of individual attention from professors, who are almost always friendly and willing to make time for you. Most professors I know have fairly strict attendance policies; anywhere from two to three absences will get you dropped from the class or at least make you lose points. If you want to slack off and be ignored, this isn't the school for you, but if you want to succeed academically we've got smart professors, smart students who contribute to class discussion and also push you to do your best, and a community that tends to make fun intelligent and intelligence fun.
While Sherman isn't exactly a bustling metropolis, there are opportunities to join student organizations and do community service if you like extracurriculars, and Dallas is less than an hour's drive away. There is also a bus that runs every hour until midnight in a circuit through the major shopping areas, so if you don't have a car or just want to save gas you still have a way to run errands, go out for a meal, see the movies, etc.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
