Rains a Lot – It rains a lot on campus, and the drainage is horrible, so it pools everywhere. Everyone is wet going to class

REALLY Small-School – I never experienced much involvement with athletics.... I think I went to a total of 2 football games, and those were both at homecoming. And I watched a volleyball and/or basketball match here or there, but only for extra spirit points during the homecoming competitions that our sorority was competing in. School spirit with athletics, at least in my experience, was a minimum -- not because we don't like AC, but because it was just never really on our radar. Our football team wasn't super great, either...I think that's just what happens when you go to a small private liberal arts college in Sherman, TX.

Not a Lot of Variety, but Pretty Decent – With only two options (cafeteria and the "pub"), the variety of food available is fairly limited, but I never had a major problem with the quality or value of the food..... Sometimes you just have to be a little creative. The standard meal plan was more than enough, because I hardly ever went to breakfast, but I also appreciated the Hopper Dollars for coffee and snacks from the convenience store.

Apart from the parking police's semi-strictness (I guess that is to be expected), I never experienced parking to be an issue. It's incredibly easy (and free) to get a pass, and even if you can't find a spot in one of the lots that's closest to where you're trying to get, the campus is so small that it doesn't really matter if you have to park sort of far away, and there's street parking as well. No problem!

One REALLY Good Professor – Being a Sociology major at Austin College exemplifies a liberal arts education.....it really just teaches you about the social condition in a variety of subcultures and theories, exposes you to new ideas, and tells you how to think critically about them. I tell people that I basically majored in Bart Dredge -- he is a spectacular professor and honestly the only reason I decided to make Sociology my major. If it had been anyone else, who knows what I would have ended up doing. And while most of the courses I took don't directly apply in a practical sense to life after college in the way that a Business Administration or similar degree might, the ideas and issues that those classes introduced me to, and most importantly the way that Bart taught us to think about such issues, made that degree totally worth it.
I do think the department could use some improvement -- like I said, there is one REALLY good professor..... which is great, but there is (or was, when I was at Austin College) only one worth praising. I took one class with the other professor at the time and ended up dropping it a couple months into the semester because it was so awful.

Guys & Girls:
Not Bad for a Small School – Considering Austin College is a small school, there's plenty of good-looking guys/girls to choose from. There's not one stereotype to describe the whole school, which makes it easy for anyone to find other people like them.

Efficient, but Not Best – The computer labs at Austin College have a reasonable number of computers and are usually not busy, except during finals week. The computers are not the newest but serve their purpose. The wireless network is acceptable and printing is easy.

Ridiculous Rules, but Lenient. There are some weird and ridiculous rules at Austin College, but the school officials do not want to make themselves look bad, so any punishments are likely to be small fines, or community service. Not a big deal.

All of the dorms are old and disgusting, as well as, way more expensive than they are worth. The best thing to happen to Austin College are the Flats on Brockett apartments that were recently built. They are the best value available. The worst thing about the dorms are the bathrooms.

I've Had a Fairly Good Experience – I was very excited to attend Austin College after receiving a $60,000 scholarship until I actually finished my first year and realized how much debt I was actually going to acrew over my next three years. Despite the financial strain, I love options for classes, the dedicated faculty, and most of the people that attend this school.

Good Variation – AC is summer heavy, chill in the fall, winter snow

Nothing Fancy, More Than Adequate – AC is a small school, but does well with resources

Religious Life – The Asian Religions teacher I have had was very phenomenal. She is an extraordinary lady with many achievements and life experience. Her lectures are always very interesting and well prepared. She is always very compassionate to students both struggling and excelling and she enjoys a wide variety of media and group discussion as the basis of her lectures.
Our religious life out of the classroom could use some improvements though as I have not seen a lot of student activism nor energy in applying what they learn in the class into campus life or the community. I feel like the chaplain could do more to empower the young adults of Austin College more.

Professors: for Better or Worse – Some professors are good whereas some are very difficult to approach. In my perspective, the professors has a lot to do with which major/minor people choose ultimately because there are so few teachers in each field that if one is unbearable, professor alternatives are limited or unavailable.
That said, there are some professors that I have found to be phenomenal. They are extremely knowledgable in their studies and love to help their students succeed.

Excellent Religious Studies Program – If you decide you want to major or minor in religious studies, Austin College is a great place for that. Their major program for religion is divided into three sub sections; one study in each is required and they can be elaborated on for completion of the major. The sub categories are Asian Religions, Christian Theology, and Biblical Heritage. Austin College religious courses are great for any major as they call the student to analyze and apply religious themes, contexts, and perspectives to other fields of study such as medicine, economics, politics, and environmental studies.

There are not a lot of courses offered. This becomes frustrating when you have to take classes for your majors that are offered at conflicting times.
College Senior 2012-07-31T01:42:45Z
Great in Comparison With Other Schools – The permit is very cheap and there are always spots (even though you may have to walk awhile). One frustrating aspect is that there are a tons of 24 hr parking spots that are always empty. If you park there (even for 5 minutes), you will be ticketed. It's ridiculous because NO ONE parks there after 5 pm and they just sit empty.

Health & Safety:
Good but Not Perfect – I feel generally very safe. The exception is at night because there are some areas of campus that do not have enough lighting.
College Junior 2012-07-30T05:37:54Z
Computer Science Lab – The computers located in the Computer Science lab are great! However, many others, such as those located in dorms, are prone to printer malfunctions and general brokeness

Old Houses in Sherman – The freedom of living off campus is great, but most of the houses available are old and run down. There are a few gems though..

Old computers and very slow. Printers always mess up

Guys & Girls:
Not Enough Guys – The guy to girl ratio is horrible so all of the hot guys are probably taken and if, on the rare chance a decent guy transfers in, he'll probably be taken soon. Also, since it's a small school, chances are you'll see your exes around campus.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
