Not Too Bad – It mostly depends on what RA you are dealing with. Some are stricter than others. When you get in trouble, you usually get a warning and a small punishment like community service. With each repeated offense, consequences get greater. The campus police normally keep to themselves unless you are showing signs you are in trouble. They do not harass you. There is a curfew, but it is pretty late into the night and there are areas in each dorm that visitors are allowed in past curfew.

I got a large scholarship to help pay for school. I heard from a lot of other people that they also received large scholarships. The financial aid office answers all my questions.

There is a 'Roo Route that takes you to the shopping centers in Sherman. It is free. You need a car or a friend with a car for long distances or to go places that the 'Roo Route does not go.

Understanding and Open-Mindedness – I feel that Austin College recognizes the reality that college students are a curious group of people. They are more than likely going to try things whether they are legal or not. Austin College accepts that fact and first tries to work with the students. They may not like this aspect of college, but they know it is there. When a student is caught with an illegal substance he or she is not kicked out or chastised for it. The school comes in and works with the student to ensure the student does not do it again but can remain on campus and enrolled in the school. Now that is after the first offense any repeated offenses and A.C.'s good graces disappear and that person is on there own. The main thing to emphasize is that Austin College is there to help you not hinder you.

Health & Safety:
AC is located in the middle of a scary neighborhood so it is inevitable that students will be scared to walk around at night. I feel pretty safe, but there are so few campus police and I wouldn't know how to reach them if I neede them.

Technology Is Almost There – Technology on campus is improving. Despite the IT being MISERABLY understaffed and other...issues within, the overall technology situation is good. Internet speeds can be slow (especially upload/download), but you can at least do your homework. Good warnings about spam and phising. The infrastructure is improving and the computers are not totally useless (need to be replaced in 2-3 years).
The printing system is good and there is a strong green initiative.

Old Vs. New – Old: Since the College has needed to cut spending, scholarship have pretty much gone out the window. I will not say the number (since I am a former employee of the College as well), however it is not good. Unhappy with the vision the College leadership (Board, Administration, etc.).

Public Transport Good, College Transport? The College has ZERO transportation for its students. The college does subsidize some of the public transportation, but it could do more. The public bus is free to AC students.

Cheap, Usually Close to Campus, but Maybe Not All to Safe – Sherman has one of the cheapest rents in America according to a survey done in 2010. A nice 3-4 bedroom, 2 bath, and decent size kitchen/living is usually around 800-900, plus utilities. Landlords are very welcoming to the AC student population, so that is another bonus.
Safety isn't always there, but that is because Sherman has minor crime issues and drug issues. Stay in groups, don't go out in the mid night hours, and be aware.

Mostly mild weather with occasional extremes including flash flooding, ice, snow, and intense heat.

At Least the Professors Believe You Have a Future – More than anything else, the professors here seem very optimistic. If you tell them you want to do something, they will most likely help you get what you say you want. They like to keep in contact after graduation and are great networking tools. This is likely due to the extremely small size of the school.

Guys & Girls:
Eh I Think They're Alright – Well you have a diverse crowd at Austin College, but you have a lot of cliques that can be kind of annoying. Yet, everyone is pretty relaxed and laid back. I reccomend joing greek life, it's a fun time and you meet a lot of great people.

Below Average – Both sexes are in general unglier (although probably smarter) than the average college student. Not only that, but usually these students carry with them an air of pretension because daddy is paying for them to go to an expensive liberal arts school where all they do is party. Overall: disgusted.

Greek Life – This exclusive, bull**** group of people monopolizes the party scene, kick GDI's (and others) out of their parties, and in general bring down both the GPA and the generally decent atmosphere at AC. As a member of Greek Life (shhhh), I would proudly support its demise.

Career Services – This program/ facility run by both students and administrators has helped me find multiple internships as well as a fellowship that paid for my time abroad. Job well done in my eyes!

Most of the good places to eat outside of school are around Kelly Square, but there is also some El Salvadorian restaraunts that have amazing food. If you want some legit Mexican food head over to La Michoacana and you'll find food straight from Mexico as well as shopping.

Free Shuttle to Airport – I live thirteen hours away from my school so it's absolutely neccesary that i can get to the airport because I don't have a car. Thankfully, the college offers free transportation to the airport.

Always Try to Keep the Students Busy – The student life over at Austin College is always trying to set up different events for the student body, but not that many people show up to them. Yet, there is a local theater and Dallas isn't far away if you're looking for something fun to do with friends.

These computers usually take forever to log into, and to open programs can sometimes take a long time. I wish they had better quality computers for us to use.

I follow the rules and haven't been involved with strictness at school so I don't think that it is too strict. I think that they are reasonable.

Austin College is really big on studying abroad. Over 70 percent of the students go abroad at some point. Austin College also has Jan terms which are the week terms in January. Students can study abroad during this time if they aren't able to fit a study abroad experience into their school schedule.

Greeks do not have any official housing on campus. They plan and host several events throughout the school year that benefit organizations in the Sherman community. They also have many parties throughout the school year, but most of them are open to all students. Some students look down on greeks if they are in Greek organizations that are considered snobby or cocky.

How I Did Science Without Being Pre-Med – Physics was a great choice. I had good profs and good material and I got to do science without suffering through pre-med at AC. I have no worries about finding a job.

Study Abroad – Austin College is ranked number one in the nation for percentage of study abroad participation, and with good reason! Trips are available to almost any destination you could want to go to, and great faculty make sure it's a worthwhile educational and cultural experience.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
